General Description
The City of Green Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is seeking a 4K Naturalist to perform work of moderate difficulty in assisting the 4K Nature Teacher with nature-based 4K instruction. This position works under the general direction of the Wildlife Sanctuary Superintendent/4K Director.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (students are in class Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:35 p.m.) from August – June. This position is subject to the instruction and training calendar as adopted by the GBAPS Board of Education.
Salary: $20.05/hour.
Additional Information: This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position with an annual contract renewal option. This position participates in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).

Examples of Duties
- Works in concert with the teacher in developing and implementing, monthly, weekly and daily lesson plans and activities for students that incorporates the nature-related content of the lesson plan based on the approved curriculum. Participates in weekly curriculum meetings.
- Communicates with parents regarding their child and the program.
- Provides seasonally and age appropriate nature-related content with the teacher.
- Interprets nature occurrences for the teacher and students, such as tracks, plants, animals, insects, weather, etc. and assists the teacher in connecting them to the approved curriculum.
- Works with students individually, in small groups, and as a whole class to teach the program curriculum and assesses the skills learned.
- Ensures all children are supervised at all times.
- Helps maintain a clean learning space; ensures that all equipment and supplies are clean and safe.
- Assists the teacher with establishing and maintaining a positive learning environment for students.
- Assists the teacher in implementing and managing emergency procedures.
- Helps the Teacher in maintaining attendance and evaluation records for the 4K Nature Program.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Resources, Environmental Education, Ecology, or other related field.
- Experience working with pre-school age children preferred.
- Naturalist or teaching experience in a Nature Center and/or nature-based program preferred.
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of wildlife and natural resources. General knowledge of the principles and practices of developing effective outdoor lesson plans for young children. General knowledge of effective teaching practices for outdoor programs.
- Ability to develop and implement effective learning programs for young children. Ability to work with young children in outdoor activities in any kind of weather for 60-80% of the time. Ability to follow effective policies and procedures and disciplinary measures. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, administration, parents, and the general public. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform the following activities:
- Lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds.
- Frequent standing, sitting, walking and talking.
- Ability to focus on projects for long periods of time.
- Ability to climb, reach, and stoop.
- Must be able to sit on and easily rise from the floor or ground.
- Ability to work outside in varied environmental conditions.
- Must be able to traverse over outdoor terrain and off paved paths, et al, in sand, mud, water snow, etc.
