The undergraduate advising team in the School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology is looking to increase our efforts in supporting undergraduate student success through academic advising. Our advisors assist a diverse student population and collaborate with administrators, faculty, and staff in various offices in our school and across UTD campus. Academic advisors support student achievement of academic and professional goals, promote student academic ownership, and foster a sense of belonging to the campus.

The above job description and essential knowledge and skills sections of this posting describe the majority of this job. Our advisors understand university core, AHT majors, all minors, and all advising-related school, university, and state policies and procedures. They support their caseload of students from the time they are a prospective student through graduation. Advising involves assisting with onboarding, registration, degree audits, and graduation. Our advisors demonstrate active listening when meeting with students and show sensitivity to student concerns, referring the student to university support services as applicable. Some advisors do teach the freshman seminar or courses related to the LLC and career exploration. They perform other duties as assigned within scope of AHT advising.

Minimum Education and Experience
– Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years academic advising, counseling, higher education, social work, human services with students, young adults or adolescents, or related experience.

or Master’s degree and two (2) years of related work experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
Demonstrates knowledge and experience related to the job duties and skills, including written and oral communication, interpersonal skills, professionalism, attention to detail, organization, and ability to work with diverse populations, manage confidential data, learn technology, meet deadlines, and complete tasks individually and on a team. Shows understanding of the functions of higher education including academic advising and student affairs and knowledge of student development theories, advising strategies and best practices in student advising.

Preference will be given to candidates with master’s degrees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborates with administrators, faculty members and appropriate staff in
providing for academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students.
Advise students about the development of educational plan options and
resources available. Notate advising sessions and information online and/or
in hard copy. Ability to identify student’s needs in order to make appropriate
referrals. Audit degree plans as required. Ensure requirements are met for
each graduation applicant. Register students for classes as necessary.
Assist with the completion of any forms or paperwork as necessitated by the
needs of each student. Participates in student success initiatives.
Participates in appropriate professional conferences and individual
professional development. Responsible for understanding and interpreting
the requirements and academic options in a specific area and in other
campus departments to facilitate the student’s pursuit of fields of interest.
Other duties as assigned.

This role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in-office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval.

Preference will be given to applicants with master’s degrees.
