Department/Division Purpose:

The Pueblo Community College STEM Department is committed to promote awareness and student achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. To prepare students for U.S. Competitiveness, and develop lifelong learning skills, a strong work ethic, and critical thinking skills that will make them be productive and successful. We continue to develop STEM curriculum to correlate with industry standards and develop hands on learning opportunities.

Job Summary Statement:
The STEM EDGE Academic and Career Expert specifically exists to provide intensive support to all STEM Students at the Pueblo Campus of PCC. Support will include tutoring, referrals, mentoring, career exploration, and transfer activities. Coaches will use a case management approach by contacting students for intake and then providing a variety of services, including one-on-one appointments, financial aid advising, and workshops on test taking, study skills, etc. This position will work with faculty to receive progress reports on students so that intervention can be done if needed. The Academic and Career Expert will create educational action plans (EAPs), provide transfer and workforce coaching. They will work closely with four-year institutions, assist students with developing a transfer pathway, and applying to the institution. This position will ensure that articulation agreements are kept current. This position will also develop and implement a STEM specific orientation, both on-line and in person, that will occur twice a year prior to the start of the fall and spring semester. ACE’s will supervise student mentors and train them to work with cohorts of new incoming STEM students, that will help them navigate PCC by introducing them to resources that PCC has to offer, such as the STEM Center, library, and other student services.

This position has been identified by Pueblo Community College as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Department of Education guidelines. As a Campus Security Authority, the incumbent in this position is required to report crimes that they become aware of to the Department of Public Safety at Pueblo Community College and must attend annual training related to these responsibilities.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 24-50-135, this position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.
Job Duties
Essential Functions

Student Support

  • Initiates and coordinates a comprehensive student advising process for all STEM students. Provides thorough academic advising services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program of study by helping students to prepare an Educational Pathway and assist them to become engaged in the educational environment. Academic and Career Experts will assist students with goal clarification, developing a personal development plan, to include an Educational Action Plan for each semester until graduation. Extensive knowledge of the STEM degree requirements for all STEM majors and pathways offered at the college is essential. The Academic and Career Expert assists students with identifying their strengths, interests, and abilities, and explains how these areas relate to STEM majors and STEM careers in order to move forward in the major selection and degree/certificate selection process. Assists in financial aid, career, and transfer services, and leads retention programs and activities. Reviews and interprets academic skills and assessment to determine appropriate course placement. The Academic and Career Experts utilizes and leverages all technological tools available, including Banner Student Information System, Degree Check, EAB Navigate, and Student database. Maintains student files, records, and data in accordance with federal, state, system, and college operating procedures and protocols, stays current on applicable laws, policies, and procedures (e.g. FERPA, Title III Department of Education grant rules and Regulations, and the Code of Federal Regulations)
  • Develops activities that provide the necessary resources to foster student ability to achieve academic persistence and success. Uses various new student assessments to navigate individual needs in regards to academics, study skills, and personal motivation, in order to guide more individualized and need-focused retention activities and resources. Responsible for retention data reports, disseminating information, and researching and providing best-practice retention intervention strategy recommendations to the STEM EDGE.
  • Provides students with career and educational pathway information. Assists students with exploring career options and preparing for the workforce.

Reporting/Supervision

  • Directly responsible for initiating and processing EAB Navigate progress report campaigns twice during the fall and spring semesters and once during the summer semester for STEM participants. The Academic and Career Experts will interpret, analyze, report, and makes recommendations regarding advising and retention interventions, and collaborates with classroom instructors to connect students to support resources that address issues that impact progress and attainment of academic and career objectives. Uses the electronic academic Early Alert in a timely fashion to stay aware of students’ class status and any issues/concerns reported by their instructors
  • Directly supervises, trains, and evaluates the performance of hourly student employees, including Peer Mentors, and tutors in the execution of program services.
  • Responsible for the collection of data. Prepares and maintains the STEM EDGE Student database, records, and reports related to students’, enrollment status, academic achievement and probation, financial aid, required advising contacts, transfer and graduation status, major, educational goals, ethnicity, and other data. Coordinates the submission of required information and reports according to the Department of Education Annual Performance Report timeline.
  • Develops and leads workshops that include, twice yearly orientations (online and in person), programs to enhance soft skills, study skills, mental health, career opportunities, advising and retention initiatives for the STEM EDGE program. Assists with programming in financial literacy, transfer assistance, career exploration and preparation, student success workshops, and academic, cultural, and career enrichment activities.
  • Documents all services provided in the STEM Student database system. Completes requested reports that include statistics on services provided and maintains printed advising materials.

  • Maintains confidentiality of student and employee information as required.
  • Completes all required compliance training within the established timeline.
  • Coordinates an on-going positive relationship with faculty, Department Chairs, Division Deans and staff on related advising activities, policies, procedures, and updates within their respective department/divisions.
