Accountant I – Development

POSITION SUMMARY

The Accountant I position is expected to produce high volume of complex development accounting work, supports accounts payable and Junior Development Accountant. Prepares schedules and work with auditors to ensure timely completion of cost certifications and tax returns of assigned projects/developments. Performs the duties listed below and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare & publish monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports on development projects during construction phase to transition to property management.
  • Prepare construction draws primarily for new construction projects under the guidance of the Assistant Controller and with project developers. Prepare development financial schedules as needed.
  • Assist Assistant Controller with preparing year-end supplemental schedules and other information as needed for the annual audit.
  • Prepare deposits and cash receipts for all development cash accounts. Prepares bank reconciliations for all development projects to be reviewed by the Assistant Controller.
  • Prepare monthly recurring journal entries and other journal entries as required.
  • Assist Assistant Controller in the month-end closing procedures and account analysis.
  • Assist Assistant Controller in preparing Cost Certification workbook for new Construction Projects.
  • Reconcile loan draws, funding payments and outstanding invoices on a monthly basis to general ledger and construction module.
  • Ensure regular and timely filing of all financial information in centralized accounting files to include any supporting documentation used to make adjustments to the monthly financials.
  • Prepare other project specific reports as needed.
  • Coordinate with Assistant Controller to respond to request for information from internal and external parties.
  • Resolve most issues independently; coordinates with Assistant Controller to resolve complex issues.
  • Assist Junior and Accountants II on daily tasks as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 2+ years related experience.
  • Property management experience desired
  • Yardi experience highly desirable.

PREFERRED SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Strong communication (verbal and written), decision-making, interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of PC MS Office applications: Excel, Word.
  • Advanced skills in Excel (lookup, pivot tables) highly desirable.
  • Perform detailed accounting office work accurately.
  • Experience working with diverse groups, i.e. staff, residents, outside contacts.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities in a fast paced, growth environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Flexible, creative, well organized.
  • A passion for housing justice and equity is highly desirable

LANGUAGE, MATH & REASONING SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, perorations”, percentage, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Physical demands include writing/typing, use of computer and paper files, answering phones, attending meetings.
