Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Role Overview:
This Accountant role acts as a member of the IDEM payroll team and has the critical role to ensure the timely and accurate processing of payroll. This role is also responsible for resolving problems, maintaining and auditing for IDEM, and overall bi-weekly processing of the agency’s full payroll of 800+ employees. The primary responsibility of the position will be procedural and flow changes for best practices for Time and Labor (T&L), disability leaves, and office procedures. In addition, the position has responsibility for query development, special projects, communications, report development, analysis and evaluations for the agency’s payroll team.
In this role you will provide key daily assistance to employees, managers, supervisors and co-workers to resolve discrepancies, solve problems and answer policy questions to ensure smooth payroll operations and correct payments.
About the Job:
As the Accountant, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting activities of an agency or fund. In this position, you will be responsible for the compliance, accuracy, and reporting of accounts and performs other duties such as auditing or financial statement analysis.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records and financial reports to assess compliance with procedural standards.
- Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice.
- Assist the supervisor in analyzing budgets, and preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs.
- Advise the controller or supervisor on the status of assigned accounts.
- Assist in the development of general policies for a fiscal program.
- Assist management in the preparation of agency or program area budget requests.
- Reconcile complex discrepancies between accounts and notifies the appropriate department or supervisor of errors.
- Prepare reports for reconciliation of grant-funded accounts.
- Analyze and interpret financial statements and reports for accuracy.
- Serve as liaison between the agency and the federal government or another funding source for assigned accounts.
- Coordinate computerized accounting system within assigned areas.
- Control the flow of appropriated funds.
- Direct the work of lower-level accountants and account clerks assisting in complex or unusual situations.

- Specialized knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of public accounting.
- Specialized knowledge of agency organization and function.
- Specialized knowledge of federal and state accounting and bookkeeping laws, policies, and procedures.
- Specialized knowledge of automated accounting systems.
- Ability to solve complex accounting methods and procedures to meet agency needs.
- Ability to prepare budgets.
- Ability to prepare and interpret complex financial statements and reports.
- Ability to reconcile discrepancies between accounts.
- Effective communication skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
