Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc., dba Heluna Health is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) agency dedicated to enabling population health initiatives to improve the overall well-being of our communities. Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Director will be responsible for oversight of all general ledger accounting and reporting activities, as well as budget, forecast and financial planning & analysis functions. The Accounting Director will assist the Controller in leading all day-to-day accounting and finance operations of a $300+ million non-profit organization, ensuring that Heluna Health has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and to be compliant with regulatory and GAAP requirements. This position is required to have a strong understanding and application of accounting principles and should be able to develop and maintain accounting processes and procedures to ensure accurate, timely and relevant financial accounting.
The Accounting Director will lead a team of seven (with two direct reports) and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that the work is properly allocated and completed in a timely manner. This position will have to manage tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting and finance activities including monthly reconciliations and financial reporting, year-end Single Audit and 403b Audit and IRS Form 990, annual budgets, quarterly forecasts/projects, long range and strategic planning, preparing materials for the Audit and Finance Committees and Board of Directors meetings, while ensuring compliance with policies, processes and procedures.
The salary range for this position is $142,290 to $164,420/annually commensurate with experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversee the General Ledger, Financial Reporting and Financial Planning & Analysis functions.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Institute policies and procedures that ensure strong internal controls surrounding system and data integrity.
Oversee day-to-day activities, including journal entries, monthly reconciliations and account analysis, explaining any changes in the accounts. - Prepare/Review monthly financial statements ensuring they accurately reflect the transactions of the organization.
Develop, update, and maintain accounting policies and procedures and ensure such policies and procedures are being adhered to.
Oversee the annual budget, quarterly forecasts and the associated planning processes; as well as providing monthly reports that compare budgeted/forecasted costs to actual costs, explaining variances - Create and maintain Excel based models for creating the annual budget; periodic forecasts; supporting strategic plans including line of business modeling and planning; KPIs, and the preparation of these deliverables as well as other ad-hoc analyses.
- Perform technical accounting research to ensure that transactions are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Research accounting standards that may have an impact to the Organization and prepare memos documenting the research, conclusion and impact to the Organization.
- Prepare and review quarterly financial information for presentation to the Audit and Finance Committees, as well as the Board of Directors.
- Assist with the coordination of annual audits and prepare/review required information.
- Preparation and review of the organization’s tax information (IRS Form 990 and other various tax forms).
Assist with preparing the annual proposal for the Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement (“NICRA”) with the Department of Health and Human Services. - Ensure quarterly bank compliance activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Sustain and build the team to optimize the skills and experience of each team member. Work with each team member to determine their annual professional development training that aligns with the department and organization goals.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization and to create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
- Identify, develop and implement procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy of the department.
- Work with each direct report to establish and monitor goals and objectives and complete annual performance reviews.
- Prepare ad hoc analyses for the Controller and senior management. Respond to inquiries regarding financial results and special requests as necessary.
Education/Experience: Four-year bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required with 1) minimum three years of public accounting experience and seven years of private industry experience OR twelve years of progressive accounting experience in a medium or large company INCLUDING 2) minimum of five years at a manager/senior manager level.
Certification:
- Active CPA license required and MBA preferred
Knowledge:
- Experience in non-profit environment with exposure to the OMB Single Audit
- In-depth understanding of GAAP
- Knowledge of the Uniform Guidance
- Knowledge of the NICRA Proposal process
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills required (incl. pivot tables & graphs)
- Knowledge of Oracle Fusion or similar ERP accounting software
