Position Information
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position is responsible for overseeing camps offered through the District and its partners for individuals with disabilities.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards

Essential Duties

  • Plan, organize, and supervise the implementation of recreation activities for youth with disabilities, including but not limited to adaptive sports, arts & crafts, mentor programs, science experiments, games, camps, field trips, outdoor/ nature experiences, theater and songs in summer, winter, or spring camps.
  • Work with Specialist to create structures (including schedules, visuals, etc) for camp appropriate to the developmental, sensory, and medical needs of the group of campers/participants.
  • As needed, supervise and positively manage all assigned groups of participants.
  • Support Recreation Leaders and Assistant Recreation Leaders in the management of camp groups, behavioral management, and sensory supports.
  • Communicate accommodation information to Recreation Leads as needed and with an understanding of confidentiality required.
  • Report any incidents and/or safety concerns Adaptive Specialist/Coordinator as soon as is appropriate.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols.
  • Provide a safe, fun and engaging atmosphere for all participants.
  • Run and oversee camper drop offs and pick ups for the day, following all required procedures in identity verification, parent notifications, and communication of important information to families.
  • Using a district provided phone, reach out to parents and guardians directly regarding camper concerns, emergencies, and important updates related to camp.
  • Work with Recreation Leaders to complete incident reports and share with appropriate supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Develop positive, supportive relationships with participants, families & the public.
  • Assist assigned supervisor with preparing information and promotional materials for assigned site; overseeing inventory and tracking of equipment and supplies, and maintaining assigned records to be used in reports.
  • Represent Metro Parks Tacoma professionally at all times.
  • Re-enforce discipline, according to camp and out of school time guidelines, as needed.
  • Perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines; provide for proper safety of participants in recreational programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
At least 2 years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities with increasing leadership responsibilities is required.
Must be available to work the entire assigned season; Fall, Winter/Spring, Summer. 2023 Summer Camp availability needed:
July 31 – August 17
Mondays – Thursdays, 8:30am – 1:30pm
Must be able to attend the mandatory training and orientation.
Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a valid First-Aid and CPR cards before date of employment or be willing to get certified once hired.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Must have leadership skills with ability to be a team player.
Must be creative, energetic and patient.
Previous work with youth / camps desired.

HOURS:
Up to 29 hours per week

ENVIRONMENT:
Recreational facilities and park environment involving indoor and outdoor assignments.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Ability to prepare written or typed recreational and leisure program material and monitor activities.
Ability to conduct classes and exchange information.
Navigating over rough or uneven surfaces outside in park locations and in the field.
Lifting up to 25 pounds.
Standing and or sitting for extended periods of time.
