JOB INFORMATION

Aging Recreation Specialist positions develop, plan, implement, and evaluate recreation programs and supportive services for older adults; train and supervise the work of full-time and part-time recreation leaders, interns, and volunteers; serve as a liaison with public and private agencies, community groups, businesses, and the general public; lead and coordinate special projects related to recreation programming, make presentations to City and non-City organizations; write reports/employee evaluations; participate in the selection of recreation staff, prepare budget estimates for programs, activities and events; recruit volunteers to increase participation opportunities for recreation programming; promotion and marketing events; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

5% effective 1/1/24

4% effective 7/1/24

2% effective 1/1/25

5% effective 7/1/25

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Recreation Specialist positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Social Work, Gerontology, Kinesiology, or a related field.

NOTE:

  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.

EXPERIENCE: One year of full-time experience planning/implementing programs and supportive services for older adults.

NOTE:

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

NOTE:

  • You must provide your own vehicle for which mileage will be reimbursed.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Experience leading/supervising several staff.
  • Public relations and marketing experience.
  • Experience working with community agencies.
  • Experience in volunteer management and recruitment.
  • Proficient skills using Microsoft Publisher, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
