American Sign Language (ASL) Facilitator

SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Community Engagement, the American Sign Language (ASL) Facilitator supports the expansion of all American Sign Language (ASL) resources and facilities effective communication in collaboration with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Cultural Specialist (CS). The ASL Facilitator enhances the dissemination of information from the D/HH CS to stakeholders, families, vendors, IRC Executive team, and staff through analyzing data and hosting community information meetings. Has no supervisory responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Voice interprets accurately from the source language of American Sign Language or Manually Coded English to a hearing person in the target language of spoken English.
  • Provides a full range of interpreting/transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees.
  • Interprets any conversation, meeting, training session, and interview, or other requested event, including providing oral interpreting to employees who do not use American Sign Language.
  • Under supervision from the Manager of Community Engagement, act as a liaison to the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) as it relates to language access activities and efforts in collaboration with the D/HH CS.
  • Facilitates effective communication with Clients, parents, caregivers and vendors in the home, clinic, and community in conjunction with the D/HH CS.
  • Maintains records, collects data, and tracks qualitative and quantitative outcomes for all language access activities and efforts in Grant Vantage.
  • Assist with the Language Access and Cultural Competency Specialist with the successful completion of all language access survey and conduct regular and periodic community language needs assessments to determine threshold languages for document translation.
  • Assists with creating ALS videos and voiceovers.
  • Coordinates and streamlines interpretation and translation services.
  • Facilitates effective communication with D/HH black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) stakeholders input from any of the following:
    • Small group listening sessions focused on language access.
    • Small group listening sessions focused on culture (e.g., African American, Native American, LGBTQ and/or other community group).
    • Public community meetings (e.g., hosted in partnership with community-based organizations).
  • Provides innovative solutions to complex challenges to improve the service to all languages served by IRC.
  • Plays a significant role, in collaboration with IRC’s Cultural Specialist and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cultural Specialist in the center’s Purchase of Services Disparity Data process, facilitating community input meetings.
  • Participates in the Community Based Organization and Disparity meetings.
  • Schedules all ASL interpretation services for the Board of Trustees meetings, all public input meetings and other required training as directed by the Manager of Community Engagement.
  • Utilizes bi-lingual skills in all aspects of the job as able and required.
  • Use office equipment appropriately and keep it in good repair. Keep work area neat and orderly. Observe all safety rules.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others. Perform as a member of the team, answer questions, share expertise and contribute to the harmony of the team.
  • Handle change well and be flexible and adaptable in dealing with interruptions, new priorities and new assignments.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Keep manager informed of pending work, work in progress and problems encountered.
  • Utilize agency’s IT systems as assigned, maintaining security and following agency’s protocol and procedures, rules, and requirements.
  • Attend training sessions as required.
  • Comply with and ensure program compliance with agency’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Assure that consumers’ rights and dignity are maintained in the provision of services.
  • Perform different or additional work as assigned.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate degree in Interpreting Sign Language (ASL) or related degree
  • At least three years of experience as an interpreter, preferably in a post-secondary setting.
  • Knowledge of regional center programs
  • Fluent in American Sign Language
  • Strong understanding of collecting data and tracking qualitative and quantitative outcomes.
  • Demonstrate the ability for public speaking.
  • Full use of an automobile, possession of a valid California driver’s license and liability insurance for the minimum amount prescribed by law or ability to provide for independent transportation. Must have and maintain a safe driving record.
