Job Summary:
This position is dedicated to the highly specialized Veterinary Anesthesia Core operated by the Research Animal Resources and Compliance unit. The Anesthesia Veterinary Technician assists veterinarians, researchers, and other technical support staff in the care of animals, prepares and performs complex animal care anesthetic procedures and oversees supply maintenance and record keeping. They also assist in clinical instruction for laboratory personnel and other technicians to ensure attainment of organization goals.
The essential responsibilities of the Anesthesia Veterinary Technician include performing all aspects of anesthetic management for selected research animals (pigs, sheep, rabbits, primates, dogs, cats, rodents, etc.) on campus including, but not limited to formation of anesthetic protocols, administration of anesthetic agents, invasive and non-invasive physiologic monitoring during sedation/general anesthesia, documentation of physiologic parameters/drug administration/anesthetic complications, and post-anesthetic monitoring of animals until fully recovered.
Responsibilities: Assists veterinarians in the care of animals. Prepares and performs the most complex animal care procedures or serves as an expert in a specialized animal care area, and serves as a resource and lead to other technicians and student employees.
- 5% Assists veterinarians and researchers in animal care, diagnostic, preventative, research, anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care, euthanasia and radiology procedures under minimal supervision. May perform minor surgical procedures or other minor invasive procedures
- 45% Prepares, completes, monitors, and documents complex technical animal care procedures and work unit activities, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity
- 5% Keeps records of all controlled substances and inventory records
- 10% Maintains surgical support facilities in sanitized, well-stocked, and in orderly manner; and ensures that preventative maintenance of equipment is performed
- 5% May assist in data collection or reporting for designated aspects of research, animal care programs, or colony management
- 10% Maintains records regarding animal treatments, medications, diagnostic procedures, and illness
- 20% Consults and schedules anesthetic procedures for research projects on campus.
Tasks:
- Operates and interprets all physiologic patient monitors including ECG, direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximeter, capnograph, gas analyzer, temperature and blood gas analyzer.
- Places venous and arterial catheters, performs intubations, local blocks, epidurals and special procedures.
- Maintains, cleans, and troubleshoots all equipment. Notifies clinician/supervisor of equipment failure or needed repairs.
- Restrains and anesthetizes various species: dogs, cats, horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, etc.
- Stocks and maintains adequate supplies of consumables in induction and storage areas of anesthesia section.
- Knows the location of the CPR crash cart and is trained in CPR techniques and drugs.
- Accurately calculates drug dosages, drug dilutions, CRIs and intravenous fluid rates.
- Performs patient pain assessment with the aid of approved clinical pain scoring chart.
- Performs needed blood tests for PCV/TP, AZO, blood glucose and blood gases.
- Assists or initiates preparation/workup of patient undergoing anesthesia by assessing patient and any clinical history. Completes a written anesthetic plan and reviews with Anesthesiologist.
- Completes charge sheets and enters all charges into patient’s account.
- Manages controlled substances according to DEA regulations, and ensures they are properly logged onto patient’s record and in other official logs.
- Maintains accurate and complete anesthesia medical record.

Qualifications:
Certified Veterinary Technician degree (CVT) in Wisconsin with at least two years animal care experience including anesthesia. Specialty training (CVT-VTS Anesthesia) is preferred but not required. Consideration will also be made to individuals without the CVT degree but with extensive veterinary anesthesia experience (at least 5 years).
License/Certification:

Work Schedule:
Flexibility of hours are between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. Some weekend and holiday hours are required.

Expected pay range for this position is $25 to $28.84 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

The Anesthesia Veterinary Technician must be able to comply with entry requirements for specialized animal facilities including, but not limited to health screening, periodic tuberculosis testing, vaccinations, and have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) (e.g. mask, respirator, etc.) as required by SOPs or policies.
