Animal Care Supervisor

Job Summary:
The Emmons Blaine Arlington Dairy Research Center is part of the Integrated Dairy Facilities for the Department of Animal and Dairy Science at UW-Madison. This industry leading facility was built in 2008, and is home to 500 milking cows, roughly 100 dry cows, and 100 neo-natal calves. This sand bedded free stall dairy facility, in the heart of the Arlington Ag Research Station just 20 miles north of Madison, allows for the completion of pen-based nutrition work, mammary and reproductive physiology research, welfare and behavioral sciences studies, calf growth research, transition cow management projects, and individual animal intake information.

The Animal Care Supervisor position supervises and coordinates the activities and work schedules of University Staff, University Staff Fixed Term-Finite, Temporary Employees, and student hourly employees. The incumbent trains new hires, supports all milk production and dairy research at the Arlington Blaine UW Dairy, and assists supervising dairy employees. The department dairy facilities include the Dairy Cattle Center (UW-Madison campus), Emmons Blaine Dairy Cattle Research Center (Arlington, WI), and interaction with the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station.

This position will work primarily at the Emmons Blaine Dairy Research Center. Production aspects include feeding, breeding, milking, and general animal care of the dairy herds. Research includes coordinating and implementing research projects involving the dairy herd to meet the needs of more than 25 faculty/academic staff and 20 graduate students and research interns actively involved in research projects. The position provides supervision, training, and scheduling of 25 University Staff herd employees, Temporary Employees, and student employees. Supervision varies dependent upon the availability of the research program manager and research specialist, but position incumbent will need to work with a high degree of independence.

Responsibilities: Supervises Animal Care Technicians in animal care procedures and/or performs animal care duties as needed to ensure compliance with animal care regulations, and works collaboratively with partners to support research and instruction.

  • 20% Oversees animal care operations, reporting animal health and welfare concerns to veterinary staff and reporting any equipment failure or facilities problems to the appropriate staff members
  • 30% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Trains animal care and research staff in appropriate practices and standard operating procedures, and schedules employees to ensure proper staffing
  • 5% Oversees animal health surveillance programs and coordinates submission of samples with diagnostic labs
  • 5% Ensures proper stock of animal care items, annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment, and hazardous material signage throughout the lab
  • 5% Administers all university and government policies related to animal care operations and reports matters of research non-compliance to the appropriate authorities
  • 15% Performs duties of Animal Care Technicians such as maintenance and oversight of animal health, performance of tests, animal husbandry, and animal biosafety as needed

Qualifications:
-At least one year of experience working with dairy cattle is required.
-Experience with dairy production management.
-Experience with personnel supervision and training.
-Experience operating truck and trailer for hauling cattle is highly desirable.
Work Schedule:
The work schedule for this position will include a minimum of 40 hours per week, with a normal shift of 4:30 AM to 1:00 PM Monday thru Friday. The incumbent will also be responsible for taking an emergency on call rotation every third weekend, and rotating holidays. Days and hours may vary and rotate in order to ensure operational need is met.

Additional Information:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Position requires frequent bending and twisting, along with repetitive motions of hands, wrists, and arms. Must be able to respond quickly to actions of 300-1400 pound animals to prevent being stepped on and/or pinned against a gate.
