Summary
Under the general direction of the Animal Control Officer, performs routine duties related to upkeep of animals and the animal shelter and performs related work as required.
This position is a tentative “At-Will” appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.
Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists with animal intake.
- Monitors, cleans and disinfects kennels and cages.
- Monitors, feeds and waters animals.
- Assists public with the adoption of animals.
- Inspects incoming animals for parasites and bathes animals if necessary.
- Performs general custodial duties at the shelter.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate staff.
- Keeps the Animal Control Officer apprised of all unusual activities or requests.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and shelter policies, procedures and safety practices.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or GED equivalent AND some previous experience caring for animals; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of and skill in:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 50 pounds.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Certification in euthanasia or the ability to be certified.
Physical Demands/Working Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both in a standard office environment. May be exposed to animal bites, infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and physical exertion on occasion. May be required to frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 50 pounds.
