Examples of Duties
- Provide daily custodial care for animals in the shelter such as feeding, handling, watering, cleaning, medicating, and transporting for outside medical care or procedures
- Exercise and socialize animals
- Assist with unloading, handling and securing of animals that may be injured, aggressive or temperamental
- Make routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health, safety, and cleanliness of cages
- Assists with euthanasia of animals as necessary
- Vaccinates, deworms, weighs and photographs all incoming animals
- Maintain the safety of all animals during transport to and from the shelter
- Provide extensive public contact and responds to routine inquiries or requests for services
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers to ensure open communication
- Attendants must always remain calm and professional and be considerate of high emotions involving the public, the animals, and other sensitive and various situations
- Responsible for preparing and maintaining various records pertaining to animal identification, animal populations, animal claims, and adoptions
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and a willingness to work with animals in shelter environment.
Manager’s Preference:
One (1) year experience in shelter, boarding kennel or veterinary office environment.
Must obtain Fear free certification within 60 days of hire.
Professional animal handling experience in animal shelter, veterinary hospital or boarding kennel preferred
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Negative drug screen and background check are required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of State laws and local ordinances relating to rabies, animal control, and confinement of animals
- Knowledge of animal husbandry and the methods of safely handling animals
- Knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and to know temperament of various breeds
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact, courtesy and firmness when dealing with animal owners and the general public
- Ability to give effective presentations on animal care, adoption, and related topics
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports concerning animals
- Ability to euthanize and dispose of animals
