Department Overview
PG&E’s General Construction Gas Department consists of dedicated to safety, quality, and efficient construction of gas facilities and electric infrastructure for PG&E’s gas and electric distribution system and portions of the gas transmission system. We are a mobile, flexible, and competitive workforce that spans the entire service territory from Oregon to Bakersfield.
Position Summary
The Apprentice Welder job is an entry level welding position with advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who perform successfully. This job will work under the direction of, and in cooperation with, a Journeyman Welder. This job requires the candidate to work towards the classification of Journeyman Welder – GC by completing a 36-month federally approved California State Certified Apprenticeship Program
Work is predominantly outdoors and is performed in all weather conditions. The individual must be able to drive safely in all weather and road conditions. This job may require working extended hours, holidays, nights and weekends depending on the seasonal demand. This job will require the individual to be able to travel and transfer to a new headquarter upon request at any time; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home. Employees must be able to wear company provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including but not limited to – hard hat; safety glasses; safety goggles; gloves; full body fall protection harnesses; ear plugs and/or muffs; safety vests; raingear; natural fiber (cotton)/fire resistant clothing consisting of long sleeve shirts and pants.
In a General Construction position, individuals must be able to travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request at any time; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home. This position will be used to fill vacancies in South region and may be headquartered in Bakersfield. This is subject to change based on business needs.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $49.63 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.
Responsibilities
- Assist lead personnel in installing, repairing, maintaining, welding, fabricating and upgrading gas transmission pipeline and distribution piping.
- Assist their lead personnel in performing welding using various weld processes.
- Assist their lead personnel in performing welding in construction and maintenance of pipeline facilities using various hand tools such as but not limited to tape measures, protractors, levels, framing squares, straight edges, and power cleaning tools.
- Must work in team environment.
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Must work safely at all times as defined by PG&E’s safety standards and procedures
- Must be able to read and comply with all required company standards and procedures
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification per American Petroleum Institute standard 1104
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
- Ability to work in all types of weather extremes
- Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays, overtime
- Ability to travel and transfer to a new headquarter upon request at anytime; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with various hand tools, including tape measure, shovel, hammer, and various wrenches
- External candidates require valid CA Driver’s License Class A Permit or Equivalent.
- Previous experience in pipeline construction (or gas pipeline, or pipeline industry or related)
- Experience in welding
- Experience working at PG&E
- Currently enrolled in state or federally approved pipeline apprentice program
- To better represent the communities, we serve within a timely manner, applicants who live within 50 Miles of the headquarters will be given preference
