ABOUT THE POSITION
The Clark County Parks and Recreation Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the position of Aquatic Specialist. As a member of the Aquatics team, you will provide oversight and supervision of our indoor and outdoor seasonal pools including lifeguarding, rotation schedules, coordinating drills and exercises and establishing safety protocols and standards. The ideal candidate will have a background in aquatics and/or swimming, be energetic, organized and provide support to the Aquatics Unit.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school AND one (1) year of professional full-time work experience in an aquatic setting

Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write “see attached resume” on your application.

Working Conditions: Specified positions may require working evenings, nights, and weekends and holiday assignments. Specified positions may require driving to rural facilities. Specified positions may require working outdoors with exposure to extreme weather conditions. May report to multiple locations throughout the workday/week, may work alternate schedules based on facility coverage needs.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver’s license at time of appointment. Possess or be able to obtain within 3 months of appointment certification in current StarGuard Lifeguard (includes CPR, AED and first aid). StarGuard ELITE® Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and/or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor equivalent desirable.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assist in monitoring activities, providing instructions, and preventing accidents in the aquatics facilities. Responds appropriately to swimmers in danger of drowning and to all illness and injury accidents around the entire aquatics facility immediately and appropriately. This includes, but is not limited to performing Lifeguarding skills, First Aid, CPR, and other until arrival of emergency medical services. Ensure facilities are clean, safe, and orderly and chemical readings are taken three times per day. Ensure chemical logs are maintained and follow procedures for reporting imbalances. Inspect facility regularly and report any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor immediately. Record and organize accurate records concerning attendance, accident/incident/injury reports, chemical readings, and schedules. Promote aquatic programs, memberships, and special events. Maintain open communication with guests, participants and/or participants parents/guardians, and other aquatics staff. Ensure facility is set up and cleaned up daily. Enforce all aquatics facility rules, policies, and procedures. When necessary, instruct swimming lessons for participants of all ages. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, including abiding to uniform requirements. Assume full responsibilities of the aquatics facility in the absence of the Supervisor and/or staff. Handle routine disciplinary issues with part-time staff needing immediate attention and communicate with the Recreation/Cultural Program Supervisor or Recreation/Cultural Program Administrator when necessary. Assist with the training, supervising, and evaluating aquatics staff to include part time pool management, lifeguards, and swim instructors. Assist in implementing staff schedules, lifeguard rotation schedules and daily assignments. Assist with planning and attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings. Completes all in-service training as required. assist in running in-services and evaluating staff skills. Complete additional duties assigned by supervisors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a typical office or recreation facility setting and use standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Specified positions may require strength and dexterity to lead and participate in specific sports activities and/or ability to drive a motor vehicle. Specified positions may require the strength of lift equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
