Head Lifeguard

JOB TITLE: Aquatics Head Lifeguard

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt Part Time

DEPARTMENT: CRE/Aquatics

SUPERVISOR: Aquatics Manager

SALARY: $20.00 per hour

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

A Head Lifeguard provides lead supervision for Lifeguards, monitors activities at the pool, and functions as a Lifeguard. Participates in the selection and assigning of Lifeguard duties. Gives instructions on rules, safety practices, and related matters. Participates in the organization of events at the pool, including swim lessons.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for all Aquatic Employees to help promote the highest level of professionalism.
  • Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks. Fills in for lifeguards as necessary.,
  • Create employee schedules, resolve any schedule issues, and work with the Management Team to cover any lifeguards shift when they are sick or have an emergency.
  • Assist the Management Team with monthly supervisor meetings and training.
  • Assist the Management Team with lifeguard training classes and certifications.
  • Assist the Management Team with lifeguard audits.
  • Performs duties of a Lifeguard, Lesson Instructor, as needed.
  • Filling in for Management Team in the event of absences.
  • Ensures that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies.
  • Interfaces with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. Provides input and feedback while responding to problems.
  • Ensures that aquatic programs are occurring as desired and assists with the overall management of swimming events.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess the following certificates at the time of application:
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate
    • American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer
    • American Red Cross Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) certification within three (3) months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment/software.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Strong swimming and lifesaving abilities
  • Proficient in English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Communicate clearly and concisely,

both orally and in writing. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision. Respond to requests/inquiries from the public.
  • Interpret and explain policies and procedures. Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work, including City officials and the public.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
      • Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Lifting of up to 50 lbs.
      • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Passing FIT/PFT tests for respiratory masks.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

One (1) or more years of supervisor and customer service experience.

Other:

Certified Pool Operator certification, Lifeguard Instructor certification and Lifeguard, First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 50 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Aquatic Facility that will include loud, constant noises, and higher humidity levels. Working from a taller height can be required.
