What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Facilities Technologist to join the Facilities Management and Operations Center (FMOC) team! In this role, you will have responsibilities as an ACS construction observer/inspector. Construction observers are ICC certified inspectors in their respective fields and are knowledgeable of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction standards as well as Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) permitting and Outage processes.

This position collaborates with construction contractors, sub-contractor employees, customers, Security, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), Maintenance, Architectural Engineering (AE) designers, System/Operations engineers, project managers and others to coordinate field activities to help mitigate and resolve field issues. Construction observers/inspectors directly support the Sandia Delegated Representative (SDR) (who has final acceptance authority for the construction work, also commonly referred to as the Project Lead (PL)). They follow the applicable codes, construction drawings and all applicable SNL Standards and Specs to ensure the project is properly documented for a construction project by ensuring work is done safely according to code, is properly closed out, and acts as the eyes and ears for FMOC construction projects.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Be the projects SDR representative in carrying out the field administration of construction contracts for the ACS discipline.
  • Determine contractors’ compliance with drawings and specifications, life safety, accessibility, quality, and minor safety standards; ensure ACS construction work meets the applicable International Building Codes (IBC) and its referenced standards.
  • Understand and apply the requirements in the International Building Codes, Sandia Design Manual, Specifications and Referenced Standards.
  • Complete field visits to job sites to observe and evaluate construction work.
  • Complete field inspection reports documenting the progress, quality and safety of construction work and other pertinent construction information.
  • Coordinate various field tests and 3rd party inspections.
  • Ensure Requests for Information (RFI’s) ASI’s, Change Orders and red lines are incorporated by contractors.
  • Assist contractors in obtaining permits and ensuring permit requirements are met.
  • Coordinate outages with the various teams as needed.
  • Identify and resolve construction and minor safety issues and reports concern to the SDR/construction safety group at Sandia.
  • Perform final inspections, provide timely and accurate inspection reports and documents acceptance of work.

Successful candidate must be able to obtain certification as a “Commercial Building Inspector” by the International Code Council (ICC) within 6-months of hire.

Overtime may be required in this position. Successful candidate must have the ability to be on call and work a flexible schedule.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range

$56,100 – $107,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • High school diploma plus 3 years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Current New Mexico Journeyman License.
    • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications, including applicable codes and standards, for institutional and industrial facilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Technical vocational degree or completed accredited apprenticeship program.
  • Current certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a “Commercial Building Inspector”.
  • Complete OSHA 10 -hour training.
  • Experience with MS Suite, Maximo, and TRIRGA.
  • Knowledgeable of Behavior Based Safety (BBS) procedures and construction practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic teaming environment.
  • Experience in effective time management and prioritization of activities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, coach, mentor and facilitate construction projects.
  • Knowledge and application of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Construction Standards.
  • Knowledgeable of ACS building components and activities, including: footings, foundations, grading, drainage, framing, lath and gypsum board installations, site utilities, fire and smoke protection features, egress, life safety, ADA/ABA accessibility.
  • Experience with High Hazard facilities construction.
  • Familiarity with systems supporting Clean Rooms/Micro Fabs.
  • Experience working with other organizations or contractors on multi-discipline projects.
  • Confined space training.

The Department of Facilities Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H), Code Inspection, and Asbestos Management is a multidisciplinary team that is committed to the success of Facilities operations in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner. We assist in the risk management and compliance of the industrial operations for facilities organizations through leading indicators, field validations, and lessons learned. The team of ES&H, code inspection, and asbestos professionals supplies real-time, implementable interpretations and decisions for all work, new materials, processes, and equipment. These services are integrated and documented throughout the life-cycle of the operations.
