Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an Archivist to assist in the management of the Museum’s archival program. Reporting to the Director of Library, Archives and Special Collections and in collaboration with the photo archivist and other colleagues, this position provides support related to management of institutional records and access to manuscript, media, digital and photographic research collections. The archivist will serve as the designated Records Manager for VMFA as a state agency in compliance with The Library of Virginia’s administration. The archivist will assist in the develop and implementation of policies and procedures related to the archiving, documentation, preservation and maintenance of collections and associated data; process archival collections; train and supervise volunteers and interns; and provide research and archival services to internal and external researchers.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a combination of education and specialized experience in the field. Professional work experience managing archival collections in a museum environment. Preferred candidates will have experience with ArchivesSpace, PICTION, TMS and Alma/Prima, and experience managing record retention and disposition schedules for a Virginia state agency. Additionally, the selected candidate must demonstrate a thorough understanding of archival description and archival preservation practices and be able to independently apply cataloguing rules, conventions and descriptive standards using integrated library system applications to properly classify materials. Superior organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are needed.

Additional Considerations

A Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) degree from an accredited program is preferred.
