Calendar and Compensation

  • $55,801.44 – $71,655.84 annually (SEIU Salary Schedule, Range 11)
  • 260 Days

General Description

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the site-based Maintenance Utility Worker performs a variety of maintenance and grounds duties to ensure that facilities meet the standards for the instructional environment. The Maintenance Utility Worker serves as the first responder to both assess and address maintenance and grounds needs in the most efficient manner. These responsibilities may require light skill in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, low voltage, repair and construction, irrigation, painting/glazing and moving equipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial assessment of repair or maintenance needs
  • Performs variety of maintenance tasks to ensure proper upkeep of the site and facility
  • Performs light construction work
  • Supports efforts to maintain the facility grounds
  • Works as needed to assist in repairs that require Skilled Craft Workers
  • Supports trades as a fill-in for absence or to provide surge capacity
  • Acts as substitute custodian in emergencies when custodial or substitute pool is exhausted
  • Assists in rainy season readiness
  • Serves as part of District in-house moving crew
  • Assists where necessary in small painting jobs and graffiti control
  • Assists in site facility repair and construction
  • Helps prepare facilities for special events as a supplement to the custodial staff
  • Performs maintenance/general cleanup duties as assigned
  • Keeps records of time and materials and other records as required for each project
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

Knowledge of:

  • A variety of trade skills at a light to medium level applied using safe work practices
  • Concepts, methods, procedures for maintenance and cleaning of facilities
  • Safe use/operation of hand and power tools, equipment and machinery
  • Standard methods, materials, and processes used to accomplish work applied using safe work practices

Ability to:

  • Estimate the scope and cost of work assignments and select necessary tools, equipment, and materials to complete the job
  • Work independently and to utilize technical help/support where needed
  • Climb, at a minimum, 12 feet
  • Speak clearly, concisely and logically and read plans/directions/diagrams in English
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license

Working Conditions
Environment:
District maintenance shop, school and other buildings

Physical Demands:
Lifting, bending and carrying. Moderate to heavy physical effort.
