Position Summary
The associate curator of education at the Georgia Museum of Art develops and implements educational, interpretive and outreach programs for a range of community audiences in Athens, at the University of Georgia and statewide. The associate curator of education works closely with the curator of education to ensure that the museum’s community and adult programming and outreach initiatives align with the mission of the museum and the vision of the education department. The education department believes that visual arts experiences have the power to inspire curiosity, expand horizons and foster a greater sense of connection to the world around us. As a resource for communities at the university, in Athens and beyond, we are dedicated to providing exceptional programming that invites visitors of all ages to create, learn and connect to art.
The associate curator of education manages a range of onsite, virtual and hybrid public programs for community and adult audiences, including the museum’s docent program, artmaking and wellness programs, and Creative Aging programs for older adults. This position also works closely with the curator of education to support university-focused programming through gallery teaching, strategic partnership building, and program support. The associate curator of education is responsible for gallery teaching and creating object-based gallery programs for a range of audiences, including the development and facilitation of art-making programs and activities that support varied learning modalities and cultivate a sense of belonging. The associate curator of education writes interpretive educational materials, develops and leads gallery tours for audiences of all ages, and assists with other education programs as needed. This position is responsible for hiring and supervising assistants for instructional purposes. Some evening, especially Thursday nights, and weekend hours may be required. The associate curator of education is an advocate for the museum locally, regionally and nationally, representing the museum with a high degree of professionalism and integrity.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Background in art, education or museums preferred. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with public speaking and familiarity with strategies for communicating ideas and information. Excellent front-line customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations and act with grace under pressure. Self-directed with the ability to take initiative and anticipate actions needed. Excellent organizational, event and project management skills. Proven ability to set goals and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize short-term and long-term projects. Strong computer skills and competency in Microsoft Office Suite, and virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom.

Duties/Responsibilities

– Develops, implements and evaluates community and adult programs for the museum
– Supports university-focused programming through gallery teaching, strategic partnership building, and program support.
– Develops and maintains relationships with relevant community constituencies and partners in Athens, at the university and statewide
– Maintains statistical and qualitative data on community programs, and provides reports as needed
– Evaluates community programs and maintain budgets for related programs and projects
Percentage of time 45 Duties/Responsibilities
Manages the docent program
– Plans and facilitates docent education meetings, develops resource materials, and arranges for training sessions with curators and other museum staff
– Manages docent resource materials and the docent lounge
– Evaluates the docent program, and assesses docent gallery teaching
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Gives object-based gallery tours, presentations, and lectures to audiences of all ages, in-person and virtually, both in galleries and offsite
– Speaks about museum educational programs to community and university audiences
– Supports other education programs as needed
