Job Description
The Asphalt Maintenance Technician is devoted to providing repair, waste removal, maintenance and equipment operation for an assigned city maintenance, waste disposal or operational function. Work may include repairing and maintaining buildings and/or grounds; performing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned equipment, typically of a smaller variety involved in grounds maintenance such as maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in asphalt/pavement maintenance
- Repair of potholes, full depth patching of damaged asphalt and repair of utility cuts
- Operate a dump truck and other construction equipment such as a roller and air compressor
- Hauling personnel, equipment and materials to and from the job
- Part of the ground crew setting up traffic control, removing damaged asphalt and cleaning/prepping the area for new asphalt
- Participate and operates the equipment associated with the seasonal loose leaf collection program and snow/ice removal program
- Required to work extended hours during emergencies and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation
Licensing/Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving, or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
