Job Description
The Asphalt Maintenance Worker is devoted to providing repair, waste removal, maintenance and equipment operation for an assigned city maintenance or operational function as assigned. Work may include but is not limited to repairing and patching parking lots and sidewalks; operating snow removal equipment on parking lots and sidewalks; repairing or replacing, brick, stone and concrete; collecting and disposing of waste materials; performing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; assisting with unloading and storing supplies; maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
- Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Performs asphalt and other related repairs
- Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
- Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
- Providing upkeep of facility grounds or highway right-of-way
- Paving, patching potholes, and repairing pavers
- Assisting with asphalt repairs, failures and utilities cuts
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation
Licensing/Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
