Assistant Center Director

Job Description

This position serves as the Assistant Center Director of a large facility and plans, organizes, and directs the operations and activities of a City of Raleigh Community Center personally or through subordinate employees. Additionally, this role supervises one full-time service technician or contracted cleaner and several part-time staff and volunteers.

Laurel Hills Community Center:
Built in 1997 on 48.2 acres of land that was established in 1975, Laurel Hills Community Center has two full gymnasiums, a large meeting room, art room, dance studio, warming kitchen and fitness room. Outdoors, the community center features two baseball fields, a multipurpose field, two outdoor basketball courts, picnic shelter, playground and outdoor restrooms. Notably, Laurel Hills Community Center has the Sassafras All Children’s Playground. Built in 2016, the Sassafras playground is designed for inclusive play, allowing children of all abilities to play together. Laurel Hills staff also manage a variety of athletic and recreation programs for youth, preschool and adults including summer camps, group fitness, and special events such as the annual Daddy Daughter Dance.

Work Hours:
This community center is a for a 66-81 hours/week facility with flexibility required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, providing coverage to part-time staff, inclement weather responsibilities, and management of patrons and staff during emergency situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages general and revolving funds, tracking and reporting of expenses and analysis of facility spending needs and procures supplies for facility and program operation
  • Coordinates facility rentals and offsite amenities
  • Develops, delivers and enhances new and existing facility programs and special events and oversees class observation and instructor evaluation
  • Recruits full-time and part-time staff including front desk support, certified instructors, and internal partnerships for program implementation
  • Provides customer service to patrons and the community, acting as a first-line departmental representative at public meetings and Neighborhood Registry Groups as well as managing patron complaints, refund requests, transfers or other exceptions
  • Oversees administration of athletic leagues and communicates with involved parties regarding inclement weather, evaluation of fields, participant safety and canceling/rescheduling games
  • Designs resource teams, public leadership groups and citizen planning committees
  • Regularly inspects the facility and park areas and submits service requests for maintenance as needed

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and up to one year of related experience may be preferred

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation

Licensing and Certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid/AED/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days post hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood, and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
