Position Summary

The Assistant Curator of Education at the Georgia Museum of Art develops and implements PK-12 school and teacher programs for general and special needs audiences in Athens and statewide, working closely with the associate curator of education and the curator of education to ensure that these programs align with the vision and mission of the education department. The Assistant Curator of Education manages all aspects of school tours and logistics for onsite, virtual and hybrid PK-12 programs, including developing tour content and art activities that support classroom curricula and a range of learning modalities. The core responsibilities of this individual include managing the docent program (including docent training) and coordinating school tours (including responding to tour inquiries and booking docents for guided tours). The employee also provides support for school partnerships and teacher programs, including professional development opportunities for PK-12 educators. The Assistant Curator of Education also writes interpretive educational materials, develops and leads tours to audiences of all ages, manages the summer Art Adventures program, and assists with other education programs as needed. Some evening and weekend hours are needed. The Assistant Curator of Education is an advocate for the museum locally, regionally and nationally, representing the museum with a high degree of professionalism and integrity.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Background in art, education or museums.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with public speaking and familiarity with strategies for communicating ideas and information.
  • Excellent front-line customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations and act with grace under pressure.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Work closely with other education department colleagues to develop, implement and evaluate school and teacher programs that align with the mission of the museum and the education department.
  • Manage all aspects of PK-12 tours (both onsite and virtual), overseeing program logistics, developing tour content and gallery teaching strategies for school tours and the summer Art Adventures program.
  • Work with PK-12 educators to ensure that tour content supports the classroom curriculum, meets state educational standards, promotes multi-modal learning, and cultivates belonging.
  • Maintain statistical and qualitative data on school and teacher programs, and provide reports as needed.
  • Evaluate PK-12 onsite and virtual tours, and maintains budgets for school programs and related projects.

Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage the docent program, including planning and implementing docent education meetings, developing resource materials, and arranging for training sessions with curators and other museum staff.
  • Schedule docents for guided tours, communicate with the docents about tour opportunities, and provide docent support.
  • Manage docent resource materials and the docent lounge.
  • Evaluate the docent program, and assess docent gallery teaching.

Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Give tours, presentations, and lectures to audiences of all ages, in-person and virtually, in the galleries and elsewhere.
  • Speak about museum educational programs to community organizations, homeschool groups, teachers and PK-12 students through outreach presentations.
  • Support other educational programs as needed.
  • Maintain P-Card and order supplies as needed for educational programs.

Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Writes and publishes interpretive educational materials for use by PK-12 students and teachers, both in print form and digitally.
  • Develop teaching packets and other materials that connect classroom curriculum to museum exhibitions and the permanent collection.
  • Create instructional materials for museum visitors onsite and for outreach programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
