Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Dean of the Sturm College of Law, and working closely with other members of the law school’s senior administrative team, the Assistant Dean of Business & Operations leads and manages all of the law school’s financial activities, including financial modeling, budget development, and financial controls. This position has an independent (dotted) reporting relationship with the Vice Chancellor for Business and Financial Affairs and with the Senior Vice Provost for University Planning, Budget and Administration on matters relating to budgetary development, planning, and management. This position also oversees a broad range of operations-related functions, including maintenance of the state-of-the-art Ricketson Law Building, information technology, facilities usage, and event planning. In collaboration with the University’s Department of Human Resources and Inclusive Community, the Assistant Dean of Business & Operations is responsible for the full life cycle of employee engagement, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and departures.
Essential Functions Finance

  • Develop, model, and manage the unit’s operating budget, including the forecasting and deployment of funds (i.e., tuition dollars, operating dollars, current-use gift funds, endowed funds, and reserve funds) in a manner aligned with unit-level strategic priorities and University policies
  • Develop, model, and manage a sophisticated enrollment management strategy designed to realize projected tuition revenues
  • Supervise, coordinate, and implement all unit-level financial functions (e.g., revenues and receivables, purchasing, accounts payable, and fiscal reporting) to achieve timely and accurate completion, as well as compliance with applicable accounting principles, University and federal policies, and donor restrictions
  • Collaborate with the Dean regarding the allocation of the law school’s expense budget and review budgetary requests submitted by unit-level department heads
  • Collaborate with the Dean on the University’s annual merit evaluation process
  • Review and approve contracts, including compliance with contracting policies
  • Manage performance of unit-level employees performing budgetary functions

Operations

  • Work collaboratively with University- and unit-level facilities management personnel to prioritize maintenance projects, address major capital needs, and execute upon emergency response efforts
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of relevant reporting areas, including information technology, facilities usage, and event planning
  • Establish and implement policies that promote the safe and efficient operations of the facility

Human Resources

  • In collaboration with the University’s Department of Human Resources and Inclusive Community, provide support to hiring managers in recruiting and hiring
  • Facilitate onboarding of employees
  • Serve as a principal point of contact for staff-related issues
  • Ensure compliance with performance management policies and procedures
  • Facilitate departure processes involving employees

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years of progressive work experience involving budget preparation and monitoring
  • Minimum of three (3) years of management/supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, finance, accounting, higher education, law, or related field
  • Experience with budget operations in a higher education setting
  • Proficiency with Banner software
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting practices

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.
  • Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Work Schedule

    Normal hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Some evening and occasional weekend hours are required.

    Salary Grade Number

    The salary grade for the position is 15.

    Salary Range

    The salary range for this position is $115,000-$135,000.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
