Job Description

General tasks and responsibilities will include: NYC Health + Hospitals is seeking an Assistant/Deputy Press Secretary to support its busy, fast-paced health system press office operation. Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing, the Assistant/Deputy Press Secretary will be responsible for developing proactive strategies to generate news media coverage and public awareness of the health system’s health and patient-focused initiatives, activities and its comprehensive, multi-year effort to build a competitive, sustainable organization that will continue to offer high-quality and accessible health care to the people of New York City. Knowledge of hospital communications and marketing is a plus.
Salary: $85K – $95K/year.

  • Help manage high volume of incoming media inquiries and coordinate responses.
  • Identify and package success stories to pitch to appropriate print, radio, TV, industry press – with particular focus on ethnic and community press.
  • Coordinate press conferences, briefings, and events.
  • Write multiple press releases weekly, as well as other briefing materials, media statements, letters to editor, etc.
  • Work closely with digital content and marketing staff to develop coordinated, comprehensive communication strategies, including multimedia, video and social media.
  • Counsel and provide guidance on media strategies and press opportunities to hospital-based public affairs staff, clinical leaders and executive staff across the health system.
  • Nominate and promote leadership and staff in various publications.
  • Monitor media coverage; compile daily news clips and weekly reports.
  • Contribute to the employee newsletter.
  • Support other writing and special projects as appropriate.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college in Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, Marketing or an approved related discipline; and,
2. Four years of responsible public relations experience involving the press and communications media, employee communications, community affairs, educational affairs, public information, corporate and business affairs, governmental and legislative affairs; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent.

Department Preferences

  • Excellent writer with knowledge of what makes news.
  • Ability to translate health industry concepts into lucid, concise messages for the media and public.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects at once.
  • Established news media relationships.
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work quickly to meet demands of 24/7 news cycle; work flexible hours, some weekends included.
  • Tact, discretion, and independent judgment.
  • Knowledge of NYC media, government and public health issues.
