Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Director oversees the management of all equity, retention, recruitment, benefits, employee relations, training and development, and policy issues for the Department’s exempt, non-exempt, contingent, and student employees.

The position:

  • Leads a unit committed to reflecting the Department’s mission, vision, and strategic focus areas of Operational Effectiveness, Staff Development and Professionalism, Safety, Student Experience and Environments, and Modernization in all aspects of the work of the Employee Services unit.
  • The Department’s lead Human Resources officer monitors and addresses workplace climate and culture issues.
  • Lead in developing workplace standards that ensure we create an inclusive and supportive community for our employees.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of work experience in Human Resources, including Staff Relations.
  • Three (3) – four (4) years of supervisory experience in an Administrative function, preferably in Human Resources.
  • Experience in an administrative role with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to supporting department staff and serving other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse workforce.
  • Commitment to developing and fostering a caring work environment that values, respects, and celebrates the contributions of all staff.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Preferences:

Preferences:

  • PHR or SPHR Certification, or SHRM Certification or Degree in Human Resources Management
  • Organizational and team leadership skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google suite, Workday.
  • Experiencing managing conflict among/between colleagues.
  • Experience working in a union or state/municipal environment; experience with facilities management staff and work issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable leading large and small group discussions, meetings and presentations.
  • Knowledge of plain language techniques and formats.
  • Supervision of training function or experience with training.

Salary Range: $112,000 to $140,000

Physical Demands

  • Normal office environment to include keyboarding, drafting correspondence, planning/documentation and notes. Able to push, pull, lift, carry objects up to 25 pounds. Ability to travel around campus for meetings and to attend to duties.
  • This position requires an on site presence. May be able to work remotely one day per week.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • This position is an essential employee related to catastrophic, weather, or other emergencies and may be required to come to campus when the University is closed.
  • Incumbent will be required to comply with the University’s vaccination protocol; all University faculty and staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID, or request and receive a religious or medical exemption before starting employment.
