Advancing equity, transforming systems, and improving lives is the mission of the UNC School of Social Work and drives everything that we do.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Strategic Communications and Marketing, the Assistant Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing at the UNC School of Social Work (SSW) acts as content manager and content editor for communications and marketing projects that support the strategic priorities of the mission-driven SSW, the #7-ranked school of its kind in the nation with a world-class reputation for social science research and a more than 6,000-person strong alumni network.
Most importantly, this role acts as a liaison between the department and the School’s research centers, institutes, labs and other affiliates; its upcoming office of community engagement and outreach; and the School’s robust practicum program.
Another key role: The communicator in this position helps ensure that the department’s projects are well-managed from a cost and scheduling perspective. This position typically manages several part-time graduate student appointments per fall and spring semester. The assistant director also helps grant-supported researchers and community engagement and outreach teams identify and find support for their communications projects.
The creative storyteller with excellent project and time management skills in this position is encouraged to capture the School’s dynamic research, teaching, learning and community engagement work.
The Assistant Director oversees and helps to generate content for the School’s fall and spring research impact report microsites; for an annual SSW magazine (summer); for up-to-date and compelling web content; and for marketing of events related to the School. Responsibilities include independently managing these projects; creating compelling material in written, video, photographic and audio forms along with other team members; and delivering the work in a timely manner.
This position works closely with faculty and staff at SSW. In particular, this role ensures that the school’s world-class research efforts, burgeoning community outreach endeavors, and robust practicum program receive excellent coverage across communications platforms and channels.
Departmental projects include e-newsletters, website content, research impact reports, fundraising solicitations, alumni outreach including an annual (printed) magazine, shortform videos, strategic marketing of SSW programs and events, and other digital and print materials.
The position works closely with all of the department’s team members to creatively make the most effective use across multiple platforms of all projects.
