Reporting to the Sr. Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation is directly responsible for supervision of staff and facilities, oversight of intramural programming and event planning, and assessment and coordinating work on campus that includes supporting the mission of the department, the Student Enrollment, Engagement and Success ( SEES ) division, and Hofstra University. This position requires a flexible weekday schedule (closing shifts) and periodic weekend hours.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Creates a robust intramural calendar that provides extensive and exciting intramural sports offerings that best meet the needs of our students and researches aspirant and peer institutions for new ideas.
- Maintains the daily upkeep of all Fitness Center facility needs and submits equipment repairs to proper resources.
- Assists with the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of student staff and student payroll.
- Conducts monthly financial reports of membership and daily guest sales, assists with the management of department database of facility usage and contributes to monthly reporting measuring key performance indicators.
- Maintains inventory of intramural and first aid equipment and makes recommendations for the acquisition of new equipment and supplies to support programs while overseeing all storage accommodations.
- Schedules facility events, maintains communication regarding programming needs, works closely with other departments regarding scheduling, supervision and facility guidelines.
- Creates and designs all promotional and technical material using the media resources available campus-wide and manages current social media venues for the department.
- Exercises sound judgement and independent initiative and handles time sensitive matters that require concise problem solving and a high degree of confidentiality.
- Serves on Division and University-wide committees, attends applicable training sessions, and speaks at various campus events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year experience in a related field required.
- Experience in facility management.
- Technological competence and computer mastery using database software including Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, web content management system software, and social media technologies.
- Strong customer service, presentation, program and project management, organization, oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Strong passion for excellence with an ability to display a positive disposition and motivate others to excel.
- Ability to work effectively and ethically with a diverse population of students, university faculty/administrators, and community members.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, be adaptive to change, manage risk and uncertainty with poise and resolve challenging situations in a professional manner.
- Ability to effectively supervise and support graduate and undergraduate staff and student leaders.
- Possess professionalism, ethical decision-making skills, discretion, and flexibility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with all methods of student engagement, intramural programming (IMLeagues), official’s training, leadership development, large-scale event management, and implementation preferred.
- Basic knowledge of the issues, trends, and concerns for students and institutions of higher education.
- Independent worker and a self-starter.
- Committed and experienced professional with a collaborative disposition.
- Ability to think critically and creatively.
- Service oriented with a participatory leadership style.
- NIRSA professional.
- Current CPR / AED certifications.

Salary/Salary Range $58,500

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
