Assistant Director of Communications, Office of the President

The University of Virginia seeks an Assistant Director of Communications to support the Office of the President. The Assistant Director’s primary responsibility will be to produce content that advances the goals of the President’s Office. This will include daily management of email correspondence, both creative and technical writing for media engagement, internal and external reports, talking points, presentations, and other products as assigned by the Director of Communications and Senior Advisor to the President. In addition, responsibilities will include general professional support to the President’s Office, including preparing briefing documents, conducting research, staffing the President, and maintaining numerous working relationships with University colleagues who serve as sources of information. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Communications and Senior Advisor to the President but may also take on projects assigned by other President’s Office staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, draft, edit, coordinate, plan, and execute email correspondence according to the President’s voice and values, ensuring accuracy and the highest levels of professionalism.
  • Conduct independent research and collaborate with others to produce high-quality talking points, quotes, citations, or other communications products for the President. This requires maintaining relationships with University colleagues and consulting with them as necessary to gather background information.
  • Independently problem-solve and generate ideas for communications. Consult and collaborate with President’s Office colleagues when necessary.
  • Serve as point person for mass mailings.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with at least three years of experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have a master’s degree with at least five years of experience.

Strong writing, organization, and communication skills and experience are required. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office tools is required. Must possess excellent judgment, demonstrated professionalism, strong attention to detail, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues with discretion. This is a fast-paced, high-volume office, and flexibility and adaptability are required. Knowledge of higher education issues is preferred.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated start date is August 2023. Anticipated Hiring Range: $65,000 – $95,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit hr.virginia.edu/benefits .
