Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Assistant Director of Insurance & Claims.
Under the direction of the Director of Insurance, the primary responsibilities of this role are: 1) to provide competent, timely and proactive claims administration and management of all newly reported and outstanding claims and incidents arising within the self insured retentions and/or deductibles in the NYULH and NYU Grossman School of Medicine insurance programs, including Property, General Liability, Automobile, Trustees and Officers, Crime, Cyber, OCIP and other insurable lines of coverage; and 2) assist the Director in the analysis of and making recommendations for the placements of the aforementioned policies on an annual basis. Responsibilities include the analysis of each newly reported incident and/or claim to determine coverage, timely reporting to carriers, process for handling deductible/SIR exposure, assignment and active management of outside counsel, direct claims handling, litigation oversight and development of a strategic plan to achieve a beneficial conclusion.
Job Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Director of Insurance, the Assistant Director of Insurance and Claims – Multi Lines will be working closely with the primary client, who is the CFO / Sr. Vice President of NYULH, the NYULH VP & Senior Counsel for Insurance Administration, the NYULH Director of Insurance, NYULH’s Insurance Department, outside Third Party Administrators (TPA) and NYULH Risk Management with the following responsibilities:
- Assume primary responsibility for the legal management and resolution of new and existing multi line claims venued in various state and federal courts throughout NY.
- Initiate and conduct claims review meetings with senior leaders of NYULH and NYU, legal counsel, insurance brokers, attorneys, third-party claim administrators and claimants to further the goal of successfully managing multi line claims to successful resolution.
- Coordinate the administration of claims with insurance brokers, various claims departments and TPAs; liaises with other departments and facilities to gather claim related documentation for discovery and related investigations.
- Work with the Director of Insurance of NYULH and NYU in the analysis of and recommendations for placement of the various lines of Insurance policies.
- Gather and analyze claims data in support of preparing reports and presentations for management; maintains and reviews loss runs for assigned insurance line.
- Maintain electronic and hard copy claim files.
- Participate in site visits, as needed.
- Direct oversight and implementation of strategic direction for defense counsel in the handling of claims in the most optimized fashion.
- Initiate and lead bi-weekly roundtable meetings providing agendas and well thought out strategic case reviews to seek authority to implement optimal resolution by negotiation or trial.
- Analyze each newly reported claim to determine whether matter should be self-handled, assigned to outside counsel, be reported to the insurance company, and/or transferred to another entity that is contractually obligated to indemnify.
- Maintain regular contact with adjusters, representatives of insurance companies and third party administrators, as needed.
- Prepare reports to senior management, as needed.
- Review, adjust and authorize claims related invoices.
- Coordinate with Risk Management all defense counsel investigation requests, privilege logs and affidavits, as needed.
- Assist in assignment of counsel.
- Keep VP & Senior Associate General Counsel for Malpractice Insurance Administration and NYULH Director of Insurance informed of material claims and status of litigations.
- Initiate early resolution of claims via direct strategic negotiation, when appropriate; encourage mediation and other forms of dispute resolution and judicial intervention, where appropriate.
- Stay up-to-date on changes in law and legal climate
- Provide legal analysis and coverage positions on coverage issues.
- Provide timely responses to time sensitive projects, as assigned.
- Attend various phases of Court conferences and trials, as needed.
- Monitor all phases of trials, reporting daily progress and modify strategies as developments dictate.
- Prepare Executive Claims Summary for each case being handled with timely reserve setting recommendations.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor’s Degree Required.
Minimum of 8 years multi line claims experience in the adjustment of liability, property, and casualty claims with a proven track record of successful claims program management. Proficient in the use of Excel, Word and Powerpoint. Self motivated to implement successful results of complex claims. Significant and demonstrable expertise in direct negotiation and NY law.
Preferred Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate Strongly Preferred, with Admission to the NY Bar, and a minimum of 8 years experience in broad-based multi line claims and litigation, insurance law, coverage issues and disputes, NY courts and the development and implementation of strategic plans of action that have been successful. Significant direct negotiation experience. Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to present case reviews and recommendations, and ability to work collegially with diverse personnel. Maintain NY bar admission in good standing for the duration of the position.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $165,000.00 – $207,000.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
