The Housing and Residential Education staff at the University of Denver provides housing and support services for 3000+ students living within University housing. Position Summary
The Assistant Director, under the guidance of the Associate Director for Residential Experiences, holds a multifaceted role with key responsibilities centered around student development and leadership. This position leads various aspects of Housing & Residential Education’s (HRE) educational and leadership initiatives including implementation of HRE’s Residential Education Model (REM), advising Hall Council, partnering with Living & Learning Communities, leading academic initiatives, and managing HRE’s social media presence.
The Assistant Director supervises 3-4 Resident Directors, a Marketing Intern, and indirectly supervises 4 Graduate Resident Directors, and approximately 55 Resident Assistants. In addition to the essential responsibilities listed, the Assistant Director collaborates with colleagues to implement the overall vision and leadership in the development of a robust academic and social environment for residents, while creating and maintaining a high level of safety, security, and well-being for all residents.
Essential Functions
Residential Education Model & Living Community Initiatives
- Assist the Director of Residential Education in the development of a learning outcomes-based residential education program that incorporates the DU’s 4D experience.
- Lead the implementation and assessment of the Residential Education Model (REM).
- Support the implementation and evaluation of living community initiatives including Living & Learning Communities, in partnership with Academic Affairs, Affinity Housing, and Residential Learning Communities.
- Coordinate, partner, and evaluate the living community experiences, including faculty engagement and academic support services.
- Build and maintain relationships with DU’s academic departments and resource offices to provide information, services, and programs to residential students.
- Ensure all initiatives are inclusive, equitable, and respectful of diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
- Design, coordinate, and manage the budget for HRE’s centralized programming initiatives.
Leadership Development
- Design, develop, and implement leadership development initiatives tailored to the needs and goals of residential students.
- Benchmark and assess leadership initiatives to measure the impact and effectiveness that are responsive to current theory and best practices.
- Coordinate workshops, training and development opportunities on competencies related to leadership development.
- Coordinate attendance and representation at regional and national student leadership conferences.
- Create and maintain a curriculum for leadership development programs.
- Design and oversee all hall council initiatives.
- Manage the budget for hall councils.
- Design and facilitate training and ongoing development for hall council advisors.
Social Media, Marketing, & Communication
- Supervise, develop and evaluate an undergraduate or graduate student marketing intern.
- Oversee the digital presence of HRE on social media platforms.
- Lead all marketing and branding strategies for the department.
- Prepare and host tabling events during Parents Weekend, Admissions, and other community events.
- Manage all aspects of communication for residents, parents & families, and the campus community related to resident experiences including, but not limited to, event promotion, community outreach, and feedback.
- Manage the budget for HRE’s branding and marketing strategies.
Campus Partnerships
- Build and maintain relationships with academic departments, student organizations, and other key campus partners to create collaborative programs and initiatives including but not limited to, the Office of Student Engagement, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of the Provost, the 4D- Dimensional Experience, the Health and Counseling Center, Living & Learning Communities, the Office of Admissions, the Burwell Center for Career Achievement, and New Student and Family Programs.
Supervision and Development
- Supervise, develop, and evaluate 3-4 Master’s level Resident Directors and indirectly supervise 4 Graduate Resident Directors and approximately 55 Resident Assistants.
- Oversee REM implementation, student engagement, student behavior and community development in designated supervisory area (first-year students or upper division students).
On-Call
- Participate in a 24/7 Senior Administrator On-Call duty and emergency response system for the entirety of DU’s residential population.
- Respond to all emergencies, critical incidents, and SAIE’s Leadership Team informed of life-threatening emergencies or serious disruptions that may require campus intervention or follow-up.
Departmental
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of professional & graduate staff.
- Assists in the departmental training of professional, graduate, and student staff.
- Oversee assigned HRE committees and serve on divisional committees or task forces as assigned.
- Attend events and programs sponsored by HRE and/or SAIE that periodically occur outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills along with the ability to work with a diverse population of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents.
- Attention to detail, with a highly organized approach to data/project management.
- Understanding of student housing operations, processes, front desk operations.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data, processes, and needs based on limited information and to research solutions.
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, legal issues, and risk management practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Student Affairs/College Personnel, Business, or a related area of study.
- Two to four years of post-Master’s work experience within residence life.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience with an ability to work effectively with staff and students.
- Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholder groups.
- Experience leading hiring efforts and designing trainings for and with diverse student and employee populations.
- Commitment to equity and social justice.
- Strong operational experience.
- Evening office hours and occasional weekend commitments are expected.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Experience supervising graduate and/or professional staff.
- Experience designing or implementing residential education or student leadership initiatives.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with some nights and weekends required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 9.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $55,000 – $60,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
