The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is an unprecedented six-time National Gold Medal Award winner for excellence in park and recreation management. This award is given by the National Recreation and Parks Association, the professional accreditation organization of recreation management.
The Prince George’s County, Department of Parks and Recreation, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division is seeking an Assistant Director at the Brentwood Arts Exchange. Under direction of the Director, the Assistant Director performs a wide variety of duties to assist in managing a multi-faceted arts center that includes contemporary art galleries, concerts and performances, arts classes, a computer lab, and retail operations. Primary areas of responsibility will include managing marketing and retail, event management, and supervising part-time employees. The Assistant Director also performs numerous tasks in supporting the arts center, implementing community-based arts programs, volunteer coordination, visual arts exhibitions, participating in budget planning, and maintaining administrative records. The Assistant Director coordinates special projects in surrounding communities; serves in the absence of the Director; and performs other related duties. The arts center operates six days per week. This position works varying hours, which may include extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
Applicant should possess a bachelor’s degree or four years of professional experience in arts management, or a related field. Applicants should have: A strong understanding of arts marketing, Commitment to developing quality arts programs that are accessible to diverse audiences; Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects at once; Knowledge of contemporary art and music; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Familiarity with community-based arts education programs; Familiarity with technology used in the visual arts; Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Must have valid driver’s license.
This position has an expected starting salary of $55,000 to $60,000.
Examples of Important Duties
- Managing marketing and publicity for visual and performing arts events, retail, and arts education programs.
- Work with musicians, technicians, and event staff to develop and present music concerts.
- Manage retail operations selling handmade works by local artisans.
- Supervise part-time staff working in marketing, design, and retail.
- Provide support to the Director in management of all aspects of art center operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or four years’ experience in the arts, arts administration, or a related field; and
- Two years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to arts, arts administration, or a related field; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid driver’s license or ability to acquire one.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree or four years experience in one of the following fields: parks, recreation, education, business administration, physical education, communication, leisure services, or in area of required specialty; and
2. Two years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, education, business administration, health education, physical education, communication, leisure services, or area of required specialty; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience;
4. A valid driver’s license or ability to acquire one; and
5. A valid operating license (e.g., county pool operator’s, child care license) as appropriate.
