PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist in the management of the district’s transportation and vehicle maintenance program. Help coordinate maintenance of all district-owned vehicles. Ensure safe and efficient operation of transportation department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
College degree, preferred
Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License with Passenger & School Bus endorsements
Valid Texas School Bus Drivers Certification
Must pass school bus driver physical examination for physical and emotional stability
Certified Drug/Alcohol Awareness Program Supervisor TAPT “Official” Certification a plus
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles.
Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair maintenance.
Knowledge on use of Petrovend AFC Fuel System.
Ability to manage budget and personnel.
Ability to coordinate district functions.
Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data.
Be familiar with roads, subdivisions, campuses, attendance zones and boundaries and individual school programs.
Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Computer skills including spread sheet and some transportation applicable software.
Experience:
Three years of experience driving school buses, preferred.
Administrative management experience in transportation operations, preferably with public school district, preferred.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Personnel
- Assist in recruiting, hiring and terminating personnel of the transportation department.
- Conduct exit interviews for transportation personnel.
- Help coordinate preparation of data necessary to process transportation payroll.
- Comply with applicable personnel policies.
Routes and Schedules
- Monitor the maintenance of bus routes and schedules for all schools in district and coordinate a plan to meet future transportation needs.
- Assist in the oversight of coordinated transportation for extra-curricular activities and special programs.
- Be aware of after-hours emergency calls due to bus breakdowns.
- Notify bus drivers, schools and public of any changes in bus routes and schedules.
- Drive bus on routes and trips when required.
Policy, Reports, and Law
- Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rules and board policy in transportation area.
- Compile, maintain, file and present all reports, records and other documents required in transportation area.
- Coordinate with school administrators to hear parent concerns, and to ensure compliance with district’s student discipline policies when using district transportation.
- Monitor preventive safety program to ensure compliance with safety standards that meet state, federal and insurance regulations.
Instructional Management
1. Assist in developing and managing comprehensive training programs to ensure bus crews meet established standards of performance.
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Assist in monitoring the repair of all district-owned vehicles and oversee plans for preventive maintenance.
- Approve vehicle repair requests and prioritize work, contract services that cannot be performed in the shop.
- Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.
Budget and Inventory
- Assist in monitoring budget and cost estimates to achieve a cost-effective budgeting process.
- Initiate purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
- Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
- Approve and forward invoices for transportation to accounting department.
- Confer on the purchase and disposal of fleet vehicles and equipment. Recommend purchases of vehicles as necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Assist with supervision and evaluation of performance of all transportation employees.
Equipment Used:
School bus and all related equipment, office equipment including ten-key, copier, fax, phone, and computers.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate district functions. Frequent district wide travel, prolonged and irregular hours, ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repairs and maintenance operations. Emotionally well balanced to be able to deal with any emergency situation that could arise. Ability to make critical decisions in pressure situations, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
