The Assistant Director of Performance Nutrition will provide expertise in clinical sports nutrition, nutrition education, and food service management to all 18 Division 1 Sports teams at Boise State University. This individual’s expertise will support the student-athletes overall health and well-being and maximize performance academically and athletically. The Assistant Director will directly report to the Director of Performance Nutrition and primarily work with all Olympic Sports teams.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Sports Nutrition and Education
- Provide medical nutrition therapy to manage or treat medical conditions, such as food allergies, nutrient deficiencies, bone mineral disturbances, RED-S, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
- Assess and analyze dietary needs, body composition, and energy balance in relation to overall health and athletic performance.
- Assess hydration needs and provide appropriate recommendations for performance and health.
- Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition for training, competition, recovery, injury, illness, weight management, travel, and overall health.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate dietary care plans and goal setting with student-athletes.
- Coordinate and collaborate with members of the Sports Performance, Health and Wellness team, coaches, staff, and other appropriate individuals for a comprehensive approach to nutrition care.
- Assess and provide appropriate supplementation recommendations for performance and health with attention to NCAA rules and regulations.
- Provide individual nutrition counseling as needed.
- Educate student-athletes, coaches, and staff on best practices in performance nutrition, such as, pre-, during, and post-exercise nutrition needs, travel nutrition, supplement safety, energy requirements, weight management, and body composition.
- Create and deliver nutrition education, such as team or group presentations, grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, and passive education materials.
Food Service Management
- Oversee management and operations of the Olympic fueling station to ensure conformance to nutritional, safety, sanitation and quality standards.
- Assist in coordinating menu ideas, training table, meal and snack plans, and travel nutrition for teams and student-athletes.
Administrative and Other:
- Maintain active dietetic credentials, licensing, and continuing education requirements.
- Assist in supervising and mentoring performance nutrition graduate assistants and interns.
- Assist in managing performance nutrition budget.
- Must be eligible for, successfully apply and receive an Idaho state licensure as a Registered Dietitian within 6 months of employment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent plus 2 years relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience working directly with elite athletes in the setting of collegiate, professional, tactical, or related field.
- Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.
- Master’s Degree in Nutrition Science, Dietetics, Food Science, or related field.
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and counseling skills.
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently.
- Excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
- Knowledge and ability to identify signs and symptoms of eating disorder/disordered eating, RED-S, and body image disturbances.
- Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy, including interviewing and education techniques.
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of food service quality and safety procedures.
- Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
