About the position
The Assistant Director – Preservation and Urban Design supports and assists the Director in providing strategic direction for the City of Dallas in matters of historic preservation and urban design. The Assistant Director provides updates to the Historic Preservation Plan and Policy, oversees the Conservation District team, and direction of urban design.
Essential Functions
- Manages, monitors, and facilitates the planning, urban design, and historic and conservation initiatives through the Chief Planners, Senior Planners, Planners, and Administrative Specialist.
- Evaluates, reviews, and checks land use, urban design, and historic preservation recommendations by evaluating demographic, zoning, economic, geographic, and infrastructure information; reviews, evaluates, and checks architectural, landscape, and urban planning plans for compliance with ordinance standards and supports the preservation of historic sites within the City’s urban design efforts.
- Coordinates and supports the activities of staff performing conservation and historic preservation review and urban design to make recommendations to department management on those issues.
- Conducts research and presents data, findings, and recommendations regarding conservation and historic preservation; develops, research, analyzes and leads urban design staff in the production of graphic illustrations, diagrams, plans, renderings, data, materials, reports and booklets to support meetings, concepts, guidelines, special infrastructure projects, community visions, and plans.
- Facilitates and manages the Landmark Commission.
- Reviews budget allocations and evaluates and analyzes management reports to configure budgetary recommendations and strategic decisions.
- Represents the City at local, state and national organizations and professional activities related to planning to maintain the image of the City and to create public support for departmental programs.
- Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
8 years of progressive experience in historic preservation, conservation districts, urban planning, urban design, architecture, historic preservation, or other field, including 3 years of management and administrative responsibility.
Licenses
None
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in historic preservation, urban design, architecture, urban planning, or a related field.
