The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD) is seeking an Assistant Exhibit Technician to assist in design, fabrication, transport and install of exhibits as well as signs, banners, posters and reports. Computer design education/experience, carpentry and installation skills are required and are as important as artistic abilities, education/experience. Proof reading, attention to detail, and outline maintenance of workshop, supplies and equipment is required. Perfect job to explore the ins and outs of exhibit design.

Under close supervision, performs manual and technical artwork in the production of exhibits and other artistic products. Exhibits Technicians must be able to use the tools, instruments and equipment of the graphic arts field, including high-end computer graphics software, Assignments typically involve assisting other staff in the design and fabrication of products.
Examples of Important Duties

  • Assists in the production of artistic products. Uses the tools, instruments and equipment of the graphic arts field, including computer graphics software, to produce assigned elements or parts of artistic products. Assists in the design of illustrations, logos, symbols, and other artwork for use in posters, banners, signs, maps, publications, exhibits, and other areas.
  • Maintains inventory of art supplies. Obtains bids and price quotes. Drafts purchase orders for printing and supplies and inspects deliveries.
  • Performs routine maintenance, organization and cleaning of equipment, supplies and work areas in the shop. Makes routine safety checks.
  • Operates vehicle to make deliveries and pick up supplies, and to take vehicle to garage for service.
  • This position pays at a rate of $16.50/hr – $22.70/hr dependent upon experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year post-secondary school program in commercial arts, graphic arts, studio arts, or related subjects; or two years of experience in commercial or graphic arts; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license required

Supplemental Information

  • Skill in the use of tools of the graphics arts field, as well as carpentry.
  • Ability to: solve practical problems; proofread and give attention to details.
  • Works in an exhibit shop.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Moderately heavy lifting (50 pounds).
  • Comfortable working on ladders for installation.
  • Frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from dangerous chemicals and the hazards of operating hand and powered tools and equipment.
  • A criminal background check will be completed prior to hire.

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
