Definition

The City of Milpitas is recruiting for an Assistant Fire Marshal.

The Assistant Fire Marshal plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of our community by conducting inspections and investigations, enforcing fire codes and regulations, and educating the public on fire prevention and safety. The Assistant Fire Marshal works closely with other members of the fire department, as well as local businesses and residents to promote fire safety and ensure compliance with fire codes. Additionally, they are responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with the community, collaborating with other city departments and agencies, and providing guidance and support to our team members.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist in the development and implementation of department policies, goals and objectives.
  • Assist in the administration of the department’s permitting, non-point source, and life-safety programs.
  • Meet with and advise developers, contractors, business, and City staff of applicable hazardous material and life-safety regulations.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and enter data as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, which include, but is not limited to, inspections, plan review, and investigations.

Typical Qualifications
Education/Training:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from and accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Science or a related field or equivalent; coursework in fire suppression systems, prevention, training, management, supervision, or a closely related area preferred.

Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of experience in a career full-time position working in a fire prevention division with a paid Fire Department and dealing with fire-safety or hazardous material inspections, public education, code enforcement, new construction and fire protection systems.

License or Certificate:

  • Possess and maintain an appropriate and valid California driver’s license throughout employment.
  • Must complete Laws of Arrest – Penal Code 832 certification within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Investigation 1A, 1B and 1C training or equivalent.
  • Completion of California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I and II training or equivalent.
  • Incumbents shall be required to obtain and maintain any other license(s) and/or certification(s) that may be required by future regulation pursuant to Federal, State, local and/or industry standards.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum two (2) years of management and supervisory experience overseeing a Fire Prevention Division with a paid Fire Department.
  • Fire Investigator certification through one or a combination of the following certification programs- California State Fire Marshal’s Office, National Association of Fire Investigators, or International Association of Arson Investigators.
  • Fire investigation experience in terms of responding to and processing an actual fire scene event, as well as generating a valid and most recent Fire Cause & Origin Report as the Lead Fire Investigator of Record that reflects and supports the said experience.
  • Experience in responding to and handling hazardous materials emergencies.
  • Completion of California State Fire Marshal Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, and 1C training, and Building Plans Examiner or Fire Plans Examiner training from the International Code Council.

MEDICAL INSURANCE
Choice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate (currently $2,228.36/mo. for family). Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.

RETIREE MEDICAL
Employees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.

DENTAL & VISION
City provides full family coverage for dental and vision at no cost to the employee.

LIFE INSURANCE
City provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.

DISABILITY INSURANCE
City provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION
City contributes $75 per month on the employee’s behalf.

VACATION
Employees earn 16-36 days of vacation based on years of service.

MANAGEMENT LEAVE
Employees earn 40 hours of Management Leave per year.

HOLIDAYS
Employees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.

SICK LEAVE
Employees earn 12 days annually.
