THE DIVISION
The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission “to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations” by operating a system of 41 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres; over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds; 11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.
Managed by a full time staff of 275 and a wage staff of 1000+ during the prime season, Virginia’s award-winning state park system boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources; including parks in the mountains; on the ocean; on the Chesapeake Bay; on 8 major rivers; on 4 major lakes; 4 rail trails; and 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. THE PARK
The park has a beach on one of Virginia’s most popular lakes, a fishing pond accessible to children and the disabled, a bathhouse-concessions complex and a boat launch. Overnight stays are made possible by camping, six camping cabins, four yurts, two six-bedroom lodges and 10 two-bedroom cabins. Seven cabins and the lodges have views of the lake. With more than 15 miles of trails, the park offers many hiking, biking and horseback riding options
THE OPPORTUNITY
In this role, you will join a winning team and assist the Park Manager in the direction of personnel, expenditures, and operations for the general management of a major state park.
The Assistant Park Manager will be responsible for oversight of day-to-day operation of the park including, but not limited to ensuring park staff adhere to park, division/agency policy; coordinating human resources functions including recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and managing employee performance; managing and tracking expenses; procuring materials/services; and assisting with development of the annual park budget to include prioritizing projects and equipment replacement needs. This position will also assist with fixed assets accounting inventory, small value assets tracking, and monitoring revenue collection and procurement/purchasing procedures for assigned staff according to division and state policy.
Additionally, the Assistant Park Manager will provide supervision and inspection of cyclical facilities/grounds/equipment maintenance tasks to ensure tasks are completed in compliance with OSHA, VHD, agency standards, or in compliance with other pertinent regulations. The incumbent of this position will also provide assistance with managing and maintaining cultural and natural resources of the park, and providing supervision and oversight of volunteer programs. In the absence of the Park Manager, the Assistant Park Manager has the direct responsibility of ensuring and maintaining continuity of operations and adherence to the goals and objectives of the park and division.
This position also ensures public safety and resource protection by enforcing park rules/regulations, and state laws as a sworn conservation officer. The incumbent will be required to reside in Department-controlled housing for the purposes of providing security and operational efficiencies to property of the Department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Previous work history, which demonstrates experience and knowledge of personnel management/supervision.
- Work history which demonstrates experience and knowledge of grounds/facility maintenance practices.
- Previous experience performing duties related to revenue collection/reporting, and financial/budget tracking.
- Knowledge of Emergency Response Plans and how to implement them.
- Previous experience, which demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to external and internal stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of resource management techniques, procedures, and guidelines.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain by start of employment.
Additional Considerations
- A degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with emphasis in forestry, park administration, wildlife management, or other closely related field.
- Current Virginia DCJS law enforcement officer certificationor ability to obtain.
- Previous park management experience.
- Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid or the ability to acquire in a reasonable amount of time.
- Considerable knowledge of natural and cultural resource issues and processes, and regulatory requirements with the ability to accommodate them into facility management.
- Considerable experience and/or education/training in one or more of the following areas: budget management, procurement procedures, supervision of employees, park/recreational operations, food service management, and management of natural/cultural resources.
- Working knowledge of major trades and constructions techniques.
- Considerable experience with managing and maintaining cultural and natural resources of the park; performs civic/community outreach, and supervision and oversight of volunteer programs.
- Previous experience in operating POS cash register/credit card machines to conduct sales transactions; utilizes reservation software to make reservations as needed.

Position requires the incumbent to become a Sworn Conservation Officer. Sworn Conservation Officer requirements: Must be a US citizen; be at least 21 years old; H.S. grad or possess GED; pass a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records check; possess or be able to obtain certification as a LE Officer in VA from the VA Dept. of Criminal Justice Service which includes accepting responsibilities related to being equipped with and using firearms. Successful applicants: shall not have a felony conviction(s) or have pled no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in VA; shall not have a misdemeanor conviction(s) involving moral turpitude, including larceny, concealment, uttering, embezzlement or perjury; shall not have conviction(s) for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence; shall not have positive results on pre-employment drug screening.
In accordance with 10.1-109.B of the code of Virginia, this position is required to reside in Department-controlled housing for the purposes of providing security and operational efficiencies to the property of the Department. The incumbent must enter into a lease agreement and demonstrate possession of liability and personal property insurance. The position requires shift work, which includes weekends and holidays. The Assistant Park Manager is required to wear state-issued uniforms and use state issued equipment.
Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain required. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, dust, animals and insects. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, pulling, climbing, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR certifications within 12 months of employment. Position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays.
