THE DIVISION
The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission “to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations” by operating a system of 41 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres; over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds; 11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

THE PARK
On the Potomac River’s Northern Neck, Westmoreland State Park offers many opportunities for family fun. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has a bathhouse, meeting area, snack bar, camp store and power-boat ramp. You’ll also find a visitor center, campgrounds, camping cabins, cabins, a playground, a fishing pier, boat rentals and 6 miles of trails.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Assistant Park Manager at Westmoreland State Park is a non-law enforcement position. The incumbent will be responsible for providing ongoing management of business/enterprise operations, monitoring contracted services, and ensuring that effective and efficient guest services/programs are safely delivered in harmony with the conservation of the park’s natural, cultural, and historic resources to provide a safe environment for park patrons and staff.
This position will be responsible for duties including, but not limited to:
- Providing guidance and supervision to staff on personnel matters; completing personnel paperwork and forms as needed; approving employee schedules/time; and assisting with the development and delivery of training related to park operations.
- Managing the Chief Ranger Visitor Experience position, which includes providing guidance on developing, reviewing, implementing, and evaluating all on-site and off-site Environmental Education programs.
- Acting as the primary merchandising officer for the park including managing/tracking sales; performing procurement transactions and making credit card purchases; coordinating inventory tracking and loss prevention management; and assisting with activities that promote marketing and the increase of revenue for enterprise operations.
- Developing, assisting with, and managing activities for special events such as obtaining permits, program planning/scheduling, working with partners to acquire funding and marketing events. The incumbent will act as a primary point of contact for event facility reservations and be responsible for event staffing and facility cleanliness before and after events.
- Collaborating with the Park Manager on the oversight and supervision of Volunteer Programs.
- Partnering with maintenance personnel to ensure the appropriate operation and maintenance of facilities/equipment/grounds.
- Ensuring the park’s compliance with food safety/health codes.
- Operating POS cash register/credit card machines to conduct sales transactions.
- Utilizing reservation software to make reservations as needed.
- Supporting activities that promote community relations as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience with personnel management/supervision and staff training.
- Experience developing and presenting programs to the public.
- Knowledge of revenue collection/reporting/accounting and budget tracking.
- Demonstrated experience tracking and maintaining inventory/supplies.
- Ability to communicate orally to provide customer service to external and internal stakeholders, and in writing to complete business correspondence, reports, and other similar documents.
- Previous experience coordinating special events, programs, and working with volunteers.
Additional Considerations
- A degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with emphasis in business administration, food service management, hotel/motel management, public administration, or related field.
- Working knowledge of facilities/grounds maintenance techniques.
- Considerable experience and/or education/training in one or more of the following areas: budget management, procurement procedures, park/recreational operations, and public safety.
- Current ServSafe certification.
Special Instructions
Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check.Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license before hire. This position requires shift work, which includes weekends, evenings, holidays, and requirement to wear state-issued uniforms and equipment. Must obtain ServSafe certification within 12 months of employment and maintain certification while employed.
