Job Description:
The Department of Horticultural Sciences, Blueberry Breeding & Genomics Lab Patricio Munoz is seeking a full time, time-limited Biological Scientist. The primary responsibilities of this position are to assist the day to day operations of the research laboratory and to develop the next generation of blueberry varieties, carry out experiments in the field of plant molecular biology and biochemistry.
As an Assistant Plant Breeder, you will work closely with our plant breeder to develop the next generation of blueberry varieties. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of new blueberry cultivars and conduct research in the field of plant breeding in a multidisciplinary team. The blueberry breeding and genomic lab have addressed various questions to understand the genetic basis of important fruit quality traits and implement marker-assisted selection in the breeding routine.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Manage, organize and conduct research: This position will focus on a multiyear project to high performance varieties while developing molecular markers for phenological traits. Expectations include focuses on phenotypic data collection; traveling in and out of state to various field sites; fruit quality analysis; conducting cross pollinations for both trait improvement and for QTL discovery; and collaborating to carry out breeding program functions.
Evaluates data accumulated in ongoing research, prepares statistical analysis and prepares written reports of research findings. Reviews literature pertinent to the research area.
Communicating with the principal investigator, laboratory manager, and other lab mates regarding the ongoing processes of the field, laboratory and the progress being made on such processes.
Maintaining an adequate research supply and reagent inventory and justifying laboratory equipment requests.
Trains and assists laboratory students in basic research techniques.
Serve as back-up to Lab manager as appropriate.
Expected Salary:
Starting at $50,000 to $65,000
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field
Capacity to learn fast.
Prior experience or knowledge in plant breeding, genetics, or related disciplines, with a specific focus on fruit quality.
Familiarity with basic breeding techniques such as controlled pollination, plant propagation, and selection.
Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and statistical tools/software.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate and organized records.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present research findings as well as communicate with growers effectively.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Passion for plant breeding and a genuine interest in contributing to the development of new and improved blueberry varieties.
Familiarity with blueberry field production and management will be a plus
