Definition

The City of Puyallup will be filling one position through this recruitment. This temporary, part-time position is anticipated to start September 5, 2023 and end June 7, 2024. The incumbent will work up to 28 hours per week. This job is open until filled.

Employees in this position conduct classes, workshops, demonstrations, and provide individual and group instruction to teach basic skills. Employees are responsible for planning and conducting activities within a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and apply their knowledge. The Puyallup Parks and Recreation department offers a variety of youth and adult classes at the Recreation Center.

The Assistant Preschool Instructor will be responsible for working in the mornings five days a week. Actual work hours will vary based on program interest and registration. The program provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment designed to meet the needs of the individual students. Activities may include class time reading, telling stories, art/craft projects and other learning activities.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Lead Preschool Instructor to coordinate, implement and instruct a preschool program involving educational elements in arts, crafts, games, music and movement for children three to five years of age.
  • Supervises a developmental program to assist the child in his or her learning processes.
  • Encourages an enthusiasm for learning and exploring through hands-on experiences, encourages experiences which develop large and small muscle coordination and motor skills, helps children develop a feeling of security and belonging through participating in group activities and by encouraging children to get along with others.
  • Safeguards program participants and provides for a clean and safe learning environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Preschool development stages;
  • Music and movement;
  • Art and craft making;
  • CPR and First Aid in child and adult;
  • Leadership qualities;
  • Proper grammar and punctuation.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively; orally and in writing;

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED;
  • Possession of CPR and First Aid (for child and adult) certification card at time of employment;
  • Experience working with children;
  • Any combination of experience, education and training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical Characteristics and Work Environment

Constant use of Talking, hearing, seeing, walking, lifting an average of 5 to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing/pulling, bending and twisting at the waist, crouching/kneeling/squatting, reaching below knees to above shoulder, handling/grasping. Frequent Demands:sitting/reaching/kneeling/squatting/handling/grasping

Occasional Demands: Arm and hand motion, lifting and carrying an average of 5 to 60 pounds (must be able to lift and carry children in case of an emergency).Works primarily indoors with moderate noise levels.
