Assistant Professor – Developmental Neurobiologist

The Department of Biological Sciences at Boise State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant professor with expertise in Developmental Neurobiology and/or related diseases. We are seeking candidates that share our commitment to research and teaching. Qualified candidates should demonstrate the potential to develop an externally funded research program that will support graduate (PhD, MS) and undergraduate student training. The candidate will contribute to existing classes and develop new classes within their expertise, including experiential learning opportunities. In their application materials, candidates should demonstrate and articulate how they plan to contribute to the growth of research capacity at Boise State University through individual or collaborative research. Candidates should describe the research infrastructure, including model systems, that they would utilize and support, and how this infrastructure would benefit the research environment at Boise State. The new hire will have the opportunity to recruit graduate students through several interdisciplinary graduate programs including Biomolecular Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Computing, Materials Science, and Ecology, Evolution & Behavior as appropriate for their research program. The new hire will play an active role in building inclusive environments in our dynamic and growing department, college, and the university. The position will be provided with dedicated research space and access to shared research facilities.

This position is supported by the Obenchain Endowment for Developmental Biology, and will receive permanent supplemental funding from this endowment to support research and creative activities. This position is a part of our departmental growth related to biomolecular and biomedical research and teaching. In addition to this position, we are hiring an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Sciences and a Clinical Faculty in Genetics and Molecular Biology.

Faculty with high levels of research activity would typically teach the equivalent of 1 class each semester (1:1 teaching workload).

Minimum qualifications:

  • A PhD and postdoc experience in a field related to Developmental Neuroscience
  • A record of research and scholarship in Developmental Neuroscience

Preferred qualifications:

  • A history of accomplishment in peer reviewed publication and independent funding appropriate to the career stage.
  • A short term (2-3 years) and long term (10 years) plan for future research activities that includes undergraduate and graduate student or postdoc training as described in the Research Statement.
  • A plan for extramural funding from the NIH and other agencies as described in the Research Statement specifically related to developmental neurobiology.
  • An interest in developing and delivering curriculum as described in the Teaching Statement. Please include a description of the applicant’s commitment to monitoring and improving teaching and thoughtful course design.
  • A commitment to creating inclusive teaching and research environments where all students are capable of learning, as articulated in both the Research Statement and Teaching Statement.

  • Cover Letter that explicitly states the candidate’s potential contributions to the Department of Biological Sciences;
  • Curriculum Vitae, which includes employment history (include dates of employment), experience with grant writing, publications, courses taught, leadership roles and responsibilities, mentorship of students, and professional activities including service;
  • Research Statement (two pages maximum) that includes research interests and future plans related to developmental neuroscience (two page maximum). The Research Statement should outline how the research plans will advance research capacity at BSU. The research statement should describe any plans to utilize or expand core research infrastructure. The research statement should include plans for extramural funding. Applicants are strongly encouraged to address the relevant “Preferred Qualifications” as outlined in the section above in addition to describing how their research would compliment existing biomedical research at Boise State University;
  • Teaching Statement (one page maximum) that includes a description of the candidate’s teaching philosophy, experience, mention of the relevant “Preferred Qualifications” as detailed in the above section and a description of a potential contributions to our curriculum;
  • Publications – please provide a merged pdf with copies of three publications that demonstrate your research accomplishments and potential.
