Position Announcement
The Department of Mathematics at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor position in data science starting Fall Semester 2024. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or a closely related field with demonstrated strong expertise in data science and/or machine learning, but candidates in all areas of applied mathematics with some experience in data science and/or machine learning are also encouraged to apply. All faculty at Utah Tech University are expected to prioritize undergraduate instruction, and the ideal candidate will desire to teach lower-division core math courses along with upper-division courses specific to the Data Analytics emphasis of the Applied & Computational Mathematics (ACM) degree program. Responsibilities

  • Teach 12 credits per semester of undergraduate mathematics courses plus the equivalent of 3 credit hours of institutional service, scholarship, and creative activity as defined by the department and University.
  • Collaborate with the department chair, ACM program coordinator, other departments, and representatives from industry to update and improve the Data Analytics emphasis in the ACM degree program.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate students in research and/or collaborative projects with industry partners within the realm of data analytics/data science.
  • Perform defined faculty duties, including holding office hours, serving on committees, attending department, college, and University meetings, and adhering to all University policies.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics or a closely related field by July 1, 2024 with demonstrated strong expertise in data science and/or machine learning preferred. Candidates specializing in other areas of applied mathematics with at least some experience in data science and/or machine learning are also encouraged to apply.
  • Commitment to teach 12 credits per semester, including lower-division core math courses and upper-division courses supporting the Data Analytics emphasis of the ACM program.
  • Commitment to provide authentic undergraduate experiences in data analytics and/or machine learning.
  • Demonstrated strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in the applicant’s area of expertise.
  • Desire to help update and grow the ACM program by improving/modernizing curriculum and creating and maintaining connections with other departments and the industry.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and colleagues, both orally and in writing.

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2024, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2024. Annual salary of $72,000+ depending on qualifications & experience, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
