Assistant Professor of Illustration

The Department of Art, Design and Visual Studies at Boise State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Illustration beginning in Fall 2024. Applicants should have a strong record of professional experience in Illustration. Candidates should have expertise in illustration fields that would complement our current Illustration program. They will have a strong commitment to teaching and fostering the creative growth of undergraduate students. An ideal candidate will have an interest in participating in shared departmental teaching in both undergraduate courses and our vibrant and growing interdisciplinary MFA program.

Established in 1993, the BFA in Illustration program has maintained high demand amongst students with roughly 65 current majors. The department is housed in the new state-of-the-art Center of the Visual Arts.

Responsibilities and Opportunities include:

  • Teach courses in Illustration. The standard teaching load is three courses per semester with the possibility of a teaching reduction for start-up curriculum development and participation in the graduate program.
  • Contribute to shared departmental courses. Collaborative teaching outside the department may also be available.
  • Academic undergraduate advising.
  • Maintain an active presence in the field through creative work and/or professional activities.
  • Development and governance of the department through serving with colleagues on committees and/or other departmental responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or an equivalent graduate degree in a related field, or a combination of relevant education and professional experience.
  • Professional background in various illustration fields, showcasing the ability to evaluate and incorporate traditional, experimental, and digital illustration techniques.
  • Proficiency in teaching a diverse range of material processes, including sketching, various drawing media, pen and ink, basic printmaking, and various paint media.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, along with other commonly used software.
  • An inclusive understanding of illustration genres and areas of focus, as well as a comprehensive grasp of art economies (commercial, gallery-based, collective, public, socially engaged, etc.) to enrich students’ perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A broad knowledge of art history, contemporary art, illustration, and design.
  • Broad understanding of the historical context of illustration, graphic design, and fine art as a foundation for innovative technical and creative explorations.
  • Ability to contextualize illustration and art within broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological fields.
  • Prior experience in connecting students with professionals in the industry.
  • Expertise in a secondary specialization area, such as animation, painting and drawing, printmaking, or motion graphics, to enhance the department’s curriculum.
  • Capability to teach illustration courses encompassing editorial, book, advertising, children’s books, concept art, entertainment art, and demonstration and critique.
  • Prior teaching experience, with a preference for experience at the university or post-secondary level in a related subject area.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $60,000 per year (9-month contract).
