The School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University seeks a dynamic artist and educator for a tenure track position in Sculpture Dimensional Studies – Fibers & Mixed Media at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will begin in August 2024. The salary range for this position is $54,000 to $60,000 annually, depending on experience.
We seek a dynamic artist with expertise in fibers, paper, dyeing, installation, and mixed media approaches to sculpture. The successful candidate will be building an exhibition record/recognition in the field and be enthusiastic about teaching. While the applicant’s relationship to material specificity or plurality may be open and variable, interested candidates should possess a strong background in sculptural methodologies with an ability to speak to contemporary practice in the field. Additionally, we encourage applications from studio artists with any of the following competencies including but not limited to craft/art/cultural theory; digital methodologies/technologies; program conceptualizing and building. A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and teaching is expected.
The Sculpture Dimensional Studies Division is one of six divisions at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. The Sculpture/Dimensional Studies Division consists of six fulltime faculty that draw on a diversity of conceptual and technical approaches to offer an expansive educational experience. The program is grounded in a material tradition while simultaneously promoting creative study challenging the ever-expanding field of sculpture. Whether students are engaged with object-based work, installation, social practice or interactive sculpture in mixed media, glass, metal, neon and fibers or a combination, the Division provides students a creative experience inclusive of their preferred media. Students can access extensive facilities and dynamic curricula that represent the breadth and depth of contemporary sculptural practice.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate introductory and advanced courses in fibers mixed media as well as work with graduate students in our cross-disciplinary sculpture MF A program. Candidates should have demonstrable skills in teaching students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Applicants should also have an interest in working in an interdisciplinary manner.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include an M.F .A. in studio art or design or its equivalent and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have an active record of exhibitions and projects at the national level and growing recognition in the field; three years teaching experience or equivalent
Responsibilities:
- Engage with divisional & school service including, but not limited to, recruitment, advising students, and other administrative duties expected from faculty.
- Commit to the university’s goals of mentorship, inclusion, and intersections.
- Teach 24 credit hours per academic year working at both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Serve as a model of professionalism and act as a resource for students within the teaching-learning environment.
