Job Description
Performs responsible professional work directing the operation of the Meeting & Event Center and planning programs and special events. Does related work as required.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Parks Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over part-time staff, volunteers, and program participants. Work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Tasks

  • Greets public and provides excellent customer service for patrons over the phone, in person, and in writing.
  • Plans, organizes, promotes, implements, directs, and evaluates recreational activities for all ages. Examples include instructional programs, outdoor adventure, and special events.
  • Supervises part-time staff, volunteers, contractors, and participants including interviewing, training, and scheduling.
  • Uses the recreation software program to register users for programs, reserve park shelters, collect fees, and perform basic transactions related to merchandise and concessions sales; includes end of the day closing process and preparing and maintaining financial and attendance reports.
  • Responsible for opening and closing facility.
  • Prepares facilities by setting up tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings, workshops, events, classes, games, and other programs.
  • Assists with daily, weekly, and monthly safety inspections including inspecting equipment for condition and safety, recommends new or replacement equipment and supplies.
  • Observes participants utilizing grounds and facilities, enforces park and facility policies.
  • Performs general custodial maintenance on grounds, facilities, and restrooms, including sweeping, mopping, painting, cleaning docks and launch areas, etc.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, merchandise, and concessions items.
  • Assists with daily operations in amusements, concessions, and marina area as needed; includes boat rental operations.
  • Performs First Aid and CPR as needed and maintains related records.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Formal Education
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation or a related field.
  • Some experience in operating and supervising an events center, recreation center, or related facility.
  • Some experience planning activities, supervising programs and/or special events.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal safety regulations and OSHA.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • English and Spanish Language skills.

Hearing/Speaking – Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.

Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/25 – R 20/30 – L 20/30 corrected.
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception – 4
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation – Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
  • Color Vision – Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

While remaining polite, courteous, and caring, must be forceful in the enforcement of safety and other regulations.

Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings

  • The Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot or cold environment. The position is best suited for someone who doesn’t mind getting wet, dirty, and sweaty and likes working around water. Job responsibilities require that the employee work inside the facility at times but go outside to assist with or evaluate a program/activity/event as well.

Hazards

  • The Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor will be exposed to trash, garbage, plants, lake water, cleaning solutions, gas, oil, and various debris. Employee will be required to wear the proper PPE while working with chemicals. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
