Job Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is with the Center for Conservation Social Science Research in the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. Specific job duties will include the following:
- Project Planning and Development: The scientist will collaborate with staff from multiple agency divisions to identify critical issues for social science inquiry and develop work plans with clear, concise objectives. This position will independently plan, organize, and coordinate complex, multi -disciplinary research using surveys, focus groups, and/or other social science techniques. Studies will apply social science to critical issues to aid management partners in decision – making. The scientist will seek and obtain competitive grants to complete research projects when needed.
- Project Implementation, Analysis, and Scientific Communication: The scientist will implement complex surveys and/or other social science techniques to meet project objectives, and analyze data, write and review technical reports, publish data in refereed journals and or/peer-reviewed proceedings, give technical presentations at professional and public meetings, and ensure that research results are distributed to management partners and the public through multiple venues. The scientist will also provide guidance and technical support to FWC on issues of human dimensions and help incorporate social science methods into natural resources management and policy.
- The scientist will participate in public outreach, staff development and training, as appropriate, and perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required for the position:
- Knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative social science research methodologies.
- Knowledge of general wildlife management approaches as well as the principles of fish and wildlife conservation sciences.
- Skills in social science data collection, analysis, and reporting tools and software(s).
- Ability to design social science research projects and collect, record, and analyze data.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish working relationships with others.
- Ability to work independently and on interdivisional/multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to the research sciences.
Minimum Requirements:
- The formal education equivalent of a Master’s or doctoral degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Fisheries, or Wildlife, Conservation Social Science, or related area.
