Job Description:
This is an FTE position for full time employment with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in the Fisheries Dependent Monitoring group. The position will provide data support for commercial fisheries and oversee biological sampling of commercial catch in the field.
Job Duties:
The successful candidate will:
- Respond to requests for commercial fisheries data sets, summaries, and analyses from internal and external agency partners, fishing industry, and the public.
- Review methodologies for collecting appropriate biostatistical data, identify data gaps and needed improvements, and develop new or improved protocols and procedures.
- Perform statistical analyses on commercial fisheries data to identify outliers and evaluate trends. Produce tables and figures for publication.
- Provide assistance generating progress / final reports for grant-funded projects.
- Prepare technical and scientific reports for in- house and outside publication from results obtained from above analyses. Prepare proposals for sampling of new fisheries.
- Supervise assigned staff. Duties include but are not limited to: recruitment, training, planning and directing work, review of employee performance, and ensuring compliance with all rules, policies and procedures.
- Assist with other projects and outreach activities, including providing outreach materials to commercial harvesters and dealers during the conduct of commercial sampling.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and 1-3 years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or a master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and 1 year of professional experience as described above.
Preferred Selection Criteria:
Candidates with a graduate level degree in fisheries science or closely related field, professional fisheries experience conducting biological sampling, experience with data analysis or data manipulation, or survey design are encouraged to apply and may be given preference. Preference may be given to those candidates with experience in collecting biological samples (otoliths and tissue) from finfish.
Required, entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of fish morphology and identification of marine fish and invertebrates
- Knowledge of biological sampling methods and data collection
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision
- Ability to communicate to the public effectively with tact and diplomacy
- Ability to gather, maintain, verify and analyze data, prepare tables, and write technical reports
- Ability to operate a computer and software for data analysis (e.g. SAS, R, SQL), spreadsheets, and word processing
- Ability to think logically and apply problem-solving techniques
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to maintain field equipment
