Description
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Director of Adapted Athletics, the Assistant Strength Coach is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of all strength and conditioning workouts for each individual athlete in the Adapted Athletics program. The Adapted Athletics program provides opportunities for individuals to participate in a diverse offering of inclusive and adaptive athletics and recreation activities within the University at a variety of skill and ability levels. The primary focus includes three major goals: preventing injury, improving athletic performance, and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. The Assistant Strength Coach will assist with athlete evaluation & testing, program design and periodization, and risk management procedures and policies. This is a temporary one year position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
- Maintains the health and well being of the student athletes
- Designs individualized training programs
- Plans and supervises group strength and conditioning workouts
- Coordinates and supervises training practices in the weightroom, outside gym, Aztec Recreation Center and other areas of SDSU that athletes will train
- Teaches student athletes how to properly lift, condition and train
- Ensures individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU and Aztec Recreation
- Ensures safety of all team members, coaches, and equipment is the top priority at all times
- Updates program calendar with practice dates
- Administers strength and conditioning tests in order to evaluate athlete progress
- Maintains a record of athlete progress throughout each semester
- Communicates and works collaboratively with other high performance staff
- Manages equipment and assists with equipment budget
- Conducts inventory checks on the team equipment and supplies on a regular basis
- Assists in overseeing the Adapted Athletics program interns and their learning objectives
- Conducts film review sessions with student athletes and appropriate parties to analyze technique
- Provides timely reports on overall team goals and progression throughout the semester
- Assists in community outreach efforts by partnering with other organizations or aiding in camps/events
- Maintains effective and up-to-date practices through ongoing professional development and continuing education
- Performs other duties as assigned
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departments
- Represents the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all times
- Maintains positive and effective working relationships with all athletes and staff
Safety
- Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
- Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence
- Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/ or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
- Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
Minimum Requirements
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, or a related field preferred
Experience:
- 1-2 years experience working strength and conditioning in athletics setting, preferably in collegiate environment
- Proficient knowledge of sports and willingness to learn about adaptive sports
- Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies
License & Certification:
- Certification as a personal trainer by NSCA, CFSC, ACE, NASM, ISSA, or nationally recognized and reasonably equivalent organization required
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Certification from NSCA or equivalent national recognized certification preferred
- Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certifications required
- Valid California Drivers’ License and proof of automobile insurance are required if driving program vehicles or individuals
- U.S. Center for Safe Sport or equivalent national recognized certification required within 30 days of employment
Trainings:
- Must complete Gender Awareness, Computer Security and Sexual Harassment Prevention training within 30 days of hire
- Must complete the California Defensive Driving Course if driving program vehicles or individuals

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Demonstrated commitment to student success and ability to train and evaluate collegiate student-athletes
- Have a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadership
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumni
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work individually and with a team
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, problem solve and meet deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite applications and Aztec Recreation website
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 15 hours per week including evenings and weekends; employee schedules vary according to team needs throughout the academic year.

There may be instances where the employee is asked to assist athletes with loads above 75 pounds. Work may require standing and moving for extended periods.

- Further interactions may include other full-time staff within Aztec Recreation, including but not limited to Recreation Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Competitive Sports Supervisor, Operations Supervisor, Member Services and Operations Manager, Member Services Coordinator, Aquaplex Manager, Aquaplex Coordinator, Building Services Engineers, and Marketing Coordinator
- Interfaces with part-time Aztec Recreation staff, Adapted Athletics coaches, program assistants, interns, high performance partners and Athletic Training staff

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Starting range $18-$21/hour
A Background Check (including a criminal records check) and Live Scan must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered this position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position. This is a temporary one year position.
